Not all non-EU citizens have to do re-entry visa. Practically, only people who need a visa to enter Irish territory at first place need to do it (e.g. Chinese citizens). What needs to be changed, is that these people who are going to be long term residents in Ireland should be issued multiple-entry long-stay visa in their country of birth when they apply for it, provided they have sufficient funds, medical insurance, study/job offer from qualified Irish institutions, plus everything else needed. As far as I know, they are only issued a single entry visa, which makes the re entry visa a compulsory step before even just travelling back to visit family during the new year holidays.

I personally never got the reason why a non EU immigrant, who has a perfect valid visa to stay and live for the country but still need to apply for a re-entry visa, when the person needs to travel to outside the state temporarily. It would make so much sense and every non EU immigrants’ life much easier to have the re - entry visa requirement removed for good.

reentry visa only exist in Ireland which is expensive and waste a lot of time. especially for a exchange student. i almost missed my exchange project， because reentry have hold my passport for three weeks.
