As a recent grad myself, I can tell you my not so popular thoughts on the grading system: (1) Extra credit is not a reflection of your true abilities. Getting points for "trying" harder is equal to losing points for always being late. (2) For those students who are great at memorizing & "working the system-which is corrupt", of course they are upset at the 10% category. My grades the past few years were actually more accurate than in the past because I was being graded on my ability. From what I understand of the IVH situation, it looks like there was an issue with subs. Changing the weight of categories will not solve this. Maybe more tests in those categories? Anyway, good luck.

My 3 honors teacher has me put in this class for next year. I didn't know this is what people thought about it until now. Originally, I thought it was just a few kids irritated with their grades but after 200 signatures I really can't imagine that this is just a joke. If this petition is not recognized by the high school then I(and many others, I imagine) will opt out of this class for my junior year.

Grades are going down today I believe and I still have not received my grade for the recent reading and listening test. This angers me because, as many have already mentioned, we have had next to no preparation for such reading and listening assignments and taking them on the very last days of the semester, we have no chance to recover from these. As well, with only 10 assignments determining our 90% of our grade, every point we miss brings us down tremendously, often resulting in grades we don't deserve. As I said before, this type of weighting only works with at least 100 points in each category. So for the incoming 4H students next year, I hope that there are more assignments actually in the gradebook. As for us, I hope for either a total points system or an 80-20 split for weighting with the 30% sections being the 80% and the 10% section being the 20% because we have the most assignments in the section that counts the least. This way, we won't suffer such a bad hit from the recent reading and listening test, and it more accurately reflects the grade we deserve for the work we did.

When I took this class last year, I did think that the switch to the new grading system (from 3 honors) put some students at an unfair disadvantage and people who had previously done very well in Spanish had difficulties obtaining the grade that they wanted based on poor performance on one difficult assignment.

I agree that the grading system this year was terrible, and needs to be reformed for the benefit of students in the future.

As a person on track to take this course, I would like this to be changed. I had trouble keeping my grade up this year because of the 20 point category controlling 30% of my grade. Also, the policy of no extra credit opportunities by the entire department should be changed. We should be rewarding students who want to make the extra effort to understand the material being taught.

For sure. In Beltran's class, the three categories that are worth 90% total have 10, 20, an 18 points respectively. In comparison, 10% of my grade is judged by 174 points. Since I'm missing 7 points in one of the categories, my grade's now a solid B, but if anyone were to look at the breakdown or ask the teacher or other students in my class, they'd see that's not the grade I deserve, or the grade that anyone else deserves. My entire class has maybe two A's, and everyone else is struggling to get a B. It's not remotely fair, it definitely deserves change. Add the majority of the points to where the majority of the grading happens, and you'll see fairer grades.
