Change Spanish IV Honors

This is not unique to Spanish IV H but a consistent problem across much of the world language department.

I am very concerned as a large number of my friends as well as myself are taking this course next year as juniors. We have all heard of numerous stories dealing with how imbalanced the points are and how unjust the course represents a student's ability and knowledge.

I for one was very upset. I had just been enrolled to the Spanish Honors Society. In order to enroll I'd had to have gotten a GPA score of 3.2 or better and had to have an A or better for three consecutive semesters. This isn't difficult but it's not easy to obtain. And in two days my grade plummeted form 96% to a 76%... 20% is a lot. We need change, it's not just for a student to have to bear this, especially when we were close to the end of the semester.

Although I'm not currently enrolled in the Spanish IV Honors program, from what I've read, I consider this blasphemy, and needs to change.

If your presentational speaking, listening, or reading is anything less than perfect (a 10 on the current rubric) it's virtually impossible to get an A.

I plan on taking this class next year and I am a very successful student in the 3 honors class. From what I am hearing, this is making students like me, on track for 4 honors, not want to take this class solely on the fact that it is an unfair course. If anything the world language department should give student incentives to take a more challenging class

I took this class during the 2012-2013 school year, and constantly had grade fluctuations from arbitrary assignments. My grade dropped 5% because my drawing of vocabulary was sub-par. For one thing I should not be graded based on artistic talent, and getting a C on an assignment shouldn't bring my 92% to an 87%.

My grade dropped from a 93% to an 81% as soon we got ANOTHER substitute teacher as the substitute for Mrs. Concha had to leave.

The grading system and curriculum need to reformed.

My 97% that I had all semester dropped to an 89% the last day of the semester. Also if you can, email the head of the world language department.

I had a 96% all semester but then a month before finals, my grade dropped to a 78%. I was working very hard on everything and brought it up to only an 82 because we have very few grades in the book. I find this ridiculous since I work very hard for my grade and considering we only have 2 grades in a 30% category where I averaged a 55%, that brings my grade down drastically. This is not fair for any student to have to deal with.

It is ridiculous that all of our grades have fluctuated this drastically. It is not fair to any of the students enrolled in this class who have worked hard all year to be set up to fail.

How are we suppose to succeed in this class when there are only seven assignments in the grade book that determine out grades? I find it hard to believe that seven assignments determine how hard we've worked all semester.

I've had a 95% all second semester until I failed a 20 point quiz 2 days before the end of the year dropping my grade to a B from a solid A. There are 2 reasons that this upsets me. First of all, we have very minimal if any practice in the interpretive speaking throughout the year. The only time we ever get to hear a native spanish or latino speaker speak rapidly using words that we probably haven't been taught is during tests. This means that we have no time or way to study or prepare for these exams. Secondly, the fact that we have next to no grades in the interpretive category allows way too much fluctuation in grade due to one or two bad tests. These blatant problems in the Spanish 4 honors classes need to be fixed.

The world language department, specifically the Spanish courses at Barrington, have a terrible grading system. The way students are evaluated and graded is not on their overall performance in the class. Instead students are graded on one or two things in the entire year that will determine your grade. It is unfair that students grades can be destroyed by one unfair weighted grade. The grading scale is obviously a problem but the department does nothing about it. So many students find themselves working incredibly hard in the class only to have their grades drop, sometimes a full letter grade, overnight and it needs to change

From what I've read in the discussion, there is truly something wrong with the current Spanish IV Honors curriculum. I took Spanish IV Honors in the 2011-2012 year with Señor Avendaño and everything was great. I learned plenty in that class, both linguistically and historically/culturally. I won't call the class an "easy A" because it did require a fair amount of outside work and dedication, but it was very possible to receive an A in that class and the curriculum and weighting of the grades was set up so that each student had ample opportunity to succeed. I'm not sure what has changed since then, but I can DEFINITELY see that this curriculum from this past year is not helping these students. I wish for them the same opportunities that I had in high school. I know many of these students to be very intelligent students (just read their comments -they are all very well read people who truly have the linguistic skills to succeed in a foreign language class) and I KNOW that they deserve better than what this class had to offer them.
