Definitely need more gritting done to Orkney roads when there is snow and ice. At the moment there is a severe lack of gritting being done

I have to drive from Deerness to Kirkwall to get to work. I am a community responder and work shifts. It has been pretty scary getting too and from work at times.if the roads could get gritted an hour earlier it would make such a difference

I work shifts in an essential service so need the roads to be safe and clear in the early hours (from 6am) to late (10.30) for traveling to and from work in Kirkwall

If they started earlier they may be able to get round the housing estates. Essential for care workers looking after people in their own homes.

Getting to work from Kirkwall to stromness for 8.30 am has been extremely hazardous this winter. Pay our council workers overtime in order to save money in the long run.

I have to go to work at 5 am to work on the pier at Stromness for Northlink and when I go to work the the roads aren't gritted for workers/passengers for the ferry.

I wholeheartedly agree with this petition. My husband is a retained firefighter and a stevedore in Stromness. For OIC to only start gritting the roads long after the first ferry has left Orkney in the winter months shows a shocking disregard for life. To not grit them throughout the night in the iciest conditions shows little or no thought to emergency vehicles/crews and shift workers using the roads late at night - the Northlink ship arrives in Kirkwall late in the evening!

Have to get the early boat from Hoy to work in Kirkwall and gritter has never been out that early.

First they take a little away. . . .no one complains. . .Then they take a bit more . .A couple of people complain. . .. Stand up and shout now or there will be nothing left . . . . .

My husband previously gritted for Aberdeen-shire and they started at this time and it made a huge difference.

Actually putting grit down would help a lot. Orange lorries driving around not gritting, isn’t that reassuring.
