Recommendation to Colorado High School Activities Association ("CHSAA") regarding Girls and Boys Volleyball Seasons
We the undersigned hereby recommend that CHSAA switch the girls and boys volleyball seasons as announced on August 4, 2020 relating to the 2020-2021 interscholastic athletics and activities calendar.
Currently, the calendar calls for the girls volleyball season to run from March 1 – May 1. At the high school level, a large number of athletes play both high school and club volleyball. In addition, there are a large number of high school coaches who also coach club volleyball. For some schools, their entire staff may be club coaches.
Club volleyball season typically runs from November (after the State Championships have concluded), through the beginning of May; although some teams will continue practicing as they prepare to attend a summer national championship event in June or July. The most important part of the club season is the “national qualifier” portion of the season which runs at nearly the same exact time as the proposed girls high school season for next year – February 26- May 2. Most clubs send teams to these qualifiers which run every weekend in March and April.
The reality is that if forced to choose between club volleyball national qualifiers and the high school season, most coaches and players would probably opt to play club volleyball. But that certainly isn’t what would be best for the coaches and players.
We propose that CHSAA switch the girls and boys volleyball seasons. This proposal is the simplest and most straightforward. The boys would playing in essentially the same timeframe in which their season was originally scheduled. The boys qualifiers end in February (with one exception which takes place over Memorial Day weekend), so clubs suspend their boys practices for the months of March, April and the first half of May while the boys play with their high school teams.
On the girls’ side, starting at the beginning of May would allow most club coaches and players to have their high school season when the most critical part of the club season has concluded. There is a window between the beginning of May and late June/early July in which there are no local Power tournaments or national qualifiers. For teams participating in the USAV National Championships, the end of the high school season will be very close to the start of the national championships, but hopefully the clubs and high schools can work together to ensure that athletes are not forced to choose. Even so, the percentage of athletes participating in both the State Championships and the USA Volleyball National Championships is small compared to those impacted by the current proposed season.
For all of these reasons, we the undersigned support switching the girls and boys high school volleyball seasons on the 2020-2021 interscholastic athletics and activities calendar.
Respectfully submitted,
High school coaches, club directors, and other concerned parties in Colorado

Many colleges make their decisions on incoming scholarships for volleyball fairly quickly after the normally scheduled fall season completion. You could be depriving a young adult of being able to further their education as some students need the financial assistance a scholarship provides Please change this sport back to the fall season
Making kids choose between HS and club is a disservice to the hard work they’ve done to be an athlete. This is a very logical solution and should also be looked at for other sports impacted by the changes to CO HS sports ( baseball and soccer).
This impacts both my daughter and my son and switching makes a lot of sense. It also helps the boys club teams have some limited time to practice and get ready for clubnationals which are around the 4th or July.
My daughter was so looking forward to the chance to play for her HS as an incoming freshman but we already have signed her club contract. Please find a way to make both happen for these girls!
CHSAA needs to understand the impact club volleyball will have on the high school season with the current schedule. We will loose players to club and will no longer have a competitive season.
Evergreen HS
As a club owner my absolute top priority has always been to get players ready for their MS and HS season. We are doing this right now, all the way to February 27th, 4 days prior to HS season starting. HS coaches will inherit players who will have practiced twice a week and participated in our newly formed "covid" league. Our teams are sent to AAU nationals in Florida every June to compete in the largest girls junior tournament in the world, 2758 teams entered in the 2018/19 season, where over 90% of teams competing are club teams, where over 500 scouts and other collegiate recruiting personnel and staff attend. So to day that kids will be missing out on this is false and a myth. HS coaches are the first ones to direct talented players towards the next steps for scholarship. Also the up to 2017 as I don't have 18 or 19 numbers. The top sport for girls in Colorado is volleyball, however despite claims been made left right and center it has the lowest percentage of scholarships given. Volleyball 2017: 27 2016: 23 2015: 43 2014: 25 4 year total: 118 (out of 9,446)= 1.25 percent. Our club like all others have been negatively affected by covid, however our club season serves as preparation to MS and HS season not the opposite. www.jumpstartvba.com

This is a direct conflict with rules that are set in place to prohibit a club sport to be played at the same time. Too many conflicts for a sport that has very high participation by girls. Needs to change back to a fall sport!
