A counter argument to think about is the fact that everyone does better/their best at something they want to do, not what they're told to do or are involuntarily signed up for. The argument made against making ROTC an optional course is valid and makes a lot more sense after seeing some parents and students post their thoughts and ideas, but the school knows what they're doing. I don't think any school would make a decision that hurts their reputation and/or their students' reputation.

I have seen what JROTC had done for my grandsons who have attended (4), two are graduating this school year. They learn discipline, team spirit, leadership and patriotism. There is no other class that is taught in Central Catholic that combines all these life lessons. I highly recommend that you keep it as a mandaatory class for freshman and sophomore students.

While I understand that a large majority of alumni want rotc to ne mandatory, if you ask around the student body, most of us either do not want it or are indifferent. It is dissapointing that the size of the rotc program will now be reduced, but the quality should be increased. About 30-50% of underclassmen do not want to be in rotc and do not care about rotc, and it shows. For many upperclassmen, the class has been considered an easy honors credit, although I hear that is going to change. I would rather have one battalion of cadets that actually want to be there instead of a brigade in which half the underclassmen don't care about what they're doing and half the upperclassmen are only there for honors credit. Having one battalion will also encourage upperclassmen officers and nco's to compete to be better as there will be fewer leadership positions. I believe that the administration made the right decision for the wrong reasons.

Central Catholic-giving young men the advantage. One of the main things that helps the students become young men is JROTC. It teaches leadership, discipline, and patriotism. JROTC may not be the best class, but the majority of people in it receive valuable life lessons.

you want to gain students but I guarantee you will lose more than you will gain. my son is a current student but I doubt his younger brother will attend. the rotc brings so much to the tradition of central, it is the backbone of the school and teaches young men discipline and self control that you can not find anywhere else. It is a sad day in Central's history.

I believe that the JROTC program should be mandatory for freshmen and sophomores because it is a tradition that has been around for years. The JROTC program is what makes Central different from any other school.

JROTC is a very important part of Central. JROTC brings out the best in people. JROTC taught me many life skills such as time management, responsibility, leadership skills and how to obey orders. If JROTC is removed, how will others receive this? Also, Central Catholic is mostly known for its JROTC program. If we remove it, how will we look like in the eyes of past, current, and future students?

The JROTC program inspired me to try my best at everything I do. It taught me valuable lessons such as teamwork and attention to detail during class. If this great program is made optional, many students may not reach their full potential and will miss these valuable skills and experiences.

I agree that JROTC is a tradition that is a major part of Central Catholic. I believe that it should continue to remain mandatory,. I understand the concern in the school wanting numbers, but I think the experience is priceless. I hope the Board will take this into consideration before the next school year. My son went through this and HE thinks it is a very, very important aspect of Central Catholic education. He is not a 'military type', but this is near and dear to his heart. He grew so much as an individual and young man through JROTC. KEEP IT!!

JROTC at Central Catholic, whether the students know it or not, teaches things that can be applied to everyday life. A little maturity, discipline, and attention to detail go a long way in the world after high school. My JROTC helped shape me into the man I am today, and it needs to remain a part of the Central Catholic Advantage.

For me, JROTC was an invaluable, formative experience. I fear that many freshman will opt out of this great opportuntiy. I know my freshman year I did not understand the importance or value of JROTC.
