Alexandria Citizens Petition

The transport system should support the economic activity that residents like my working family bring, and not worsen like it has since we moved in. We already commute 4 in a car with a Prius to reduce traffic and pollution, on the road well before 7 am to avoid traffic. This is ok with us but worsening our travel by reducing lanes on our main commute road is not. My husband and I do not support the reduction in lanes and we want our taxes to focus on issues like getting rid of the mold in public schools, getting bus transport to the high school and other important matters that will help and not hurt my family's life here.

Rush-hour cut-through traffic, including many Maryland tags, on Fort Williams has made the lower north side, leading to Duke Street, almost impassable at times. Reducing lanes on Seminary Road will cause even more gridlock and cut-through traffic.

Cut through, rush hour traffic on Fort Williams Parkway has increased dramatically in the last year. Any reduction in Seminary Road lanes will make this worse. I am watching closely how each Council member votes on this issue; it will definitely be the principal influence on my vote in the next election.

I support this petition to reject any recommendation from T&ES or any other party that proposes reducing the number of motor vehicle lanes on Seminary Road between Howard Road and Quaker Lane. (Alexandria Resident).

I walk every morning on a route that covers Seminary Road, Howard St., Braddock Road, King Street, Janney's Lane and N. Quaker Lane. During rush hour rarely do I see even one bike rider on any of these streets! Additionally, it is insulting to suggest that BRAC has not drastically increased the traffic on Seminary Road during the morning rush. All you have to do is count the cars with Maryland tags turning onto Seminary Road from Quaker Lane.

Critical to keep Seminary Road 4 lanes. Traffic is pouring through our neighborhood now, it will be awful if the lanes are reduced on Seminar.

In the absence of a developed and reliable public transportation system and with all major city routes being already badly congested, reducing the number of lanes on Seminary road which is one of the main city arteries will have a severely adverse effect on many Alexandria citizens on a DAILY BASIS. We should not forget businesses/ people who travel to work in Alexandria and of course school, hospital and fire station traffic which must have quick and safe passage. Most Alexandria residents work and many kids have school or other activities on the other end of Alexandria or outside of the city. My elderly mother and child would happily use public transportation but in most cases there is no public transportation option even to relatively close destinations or it takes twice the time. This summer using the metro was highly problematic. The city needs to focus on creating public transportation alternatives rather than to further congest the main transportation arteries. Bikes and scooters is not the only answer for all the transportation and environmental problems in a city the size of Alexandria which is a part of a bigger metropolis. Adding bike lanes at the expense of car lanes at Seminary Rd is not a thought through proposition. Bigger congestion might only exacerbate pollution and will certainly make the road less safe and the majority of residents frustrated.

Please do not reduce the lanes on Quaker Lane. Adding a sidewalk would be a great benefit.

The main issue with cut-through traffic is the Taylor Run/Duke Street ramp to 495 on Telegraph. When are we going to start talking about resolving that major problem?

As a resident of this beautiful City who does not drive and relies on public transportation and being able to walk safely, I urge the Council to not go against the wishes of the majority of those of us that will be directly affected.

I commute to and from work on Quaker lane and the congestion of traffic is beyond frustrating. I have to get to telegraph road and it takes an additional 30+ minutes just to get through Alexandria.

DO NOT reduce the lanes needed on Seminary Road -- they exist for access to the hospital, for those accessing schools and businesses. Modification is NOT necessary! Thank you.

I agree with the assessments -- leave the 4 lanes alone; 3 lanes sound like an accident waiting to happen; and 2 lanes will create hazards for emergency responders from our local hospital and fire department.

I support retaining four lanes with added safety crosswalks; I oppose a city government that would go against the wishes of a majority of its citizens. I reject those who say that by retaining an already relatively stretch of arterial roadway and advocating for even stronger safety measures on the four lanes, that that is an ant-safety position.
