This dress code is very sexist and infurtiating, especially as a girl. This dress code first of all, would not even be neccessary if Mr Eller would just come in and enforce the perfectly fine old one. The old code didn't hurt anyone, and girls showing their shoulders and knees certainly didn't hinder anyone from being capable to learn. This new dress code does not allow girls to be able to carry around purses/small bags for personal items such as pads/tampons which are for some reason seen as taboo in today's society. If you all are going to disrespect a natural body function that we have no control over, at least let us be able to discreetly carry around the neccessary items to keep us healthy. Online and on an hcde website (if I'm not mistaken) it states that principals are legally requied to give their school's students a 6 month notice in uniform/dress code changes. Where was our warning Eller? Especially now that most parents had contacted the school regarding a dress code change, and were told that there would not be a change. Uniforms can be expensive and hard to come by for families of lesser fortune, how do you expect them to be able to pay for this dress code all of a sudden? And giving ISS for students who can't be provided a change of clothes? That's absolutely ridiculous. By giving us ISS over a small piece of fabric, you are telling us (girls especially) that a polo shirt tucked into khakis are more important than getting a quality education that will get us farther in life. I was looking forward to this school year, but now, not so much since you've imposed all of these ridiculous rules just to make yourself seem more powerful.

Where was the parental involvement in this decision for a dress code? Where's the 6 month notice for a drastic change in dress code? Where is the enforcement of the breakers of last years dress code? Where is the warning, that if breaking of the dress code continues, the whole school might switch to a strict dress code? Why is this dress code so hindering to females? No purses for privacy, no shoulders showing or sleeveless shirts even on Fridays. Focusing on female shoulders and knees is sending a message to our females that they are being reduced to parts, not a whole human, that they are the wrong ones distracting others. I have 2 daughters at this school, and I personally wouldn't want a male teacher pointing out any flaws with my daughter's attire in private or in front of the whole class. Maybe teachers should of told us that some of them wanted uniforms-we are in shock because during the summer the office told us that we were not switching to uniforms. Since the announcement of this new dress code, my strong, confident daughters have been wondering what they will look like in a polo, will they still look feminine, will tucking in a shirt make their stomach appear a certain way? These are things that were not even on their radar before. They were always excited about buying some new cute shirts and jeans for the start of the school year. They were more focused on what they were studying at the start of the year not their outside appearance or the appearance of their friends. We want more explanation of how this decision came to be and the studies backing why the school thinks it's a good decision and does it make the school a safer? Just wanting answers.

Took the advice of others below and contacted our School Board Representative Mr. Joe Wingate at [email protected]. Please do your part and share this on Facebook and post comments on the school Facebook page. New principal Mr. Brent Eller may have the support of his friends (laughable Facebook post from Bethany Cabeen Norman in his support that does not even have a child that attends the school), but the parents of East Hamilton are definitely not behind him.

i came to this school from east ridge and if this happens you will end up with more students having ISS, less time in the class room, and teachers spending less time preparing for a class and more time with a clipboard standing at the door checking for un-tucked shirts and missing belts and why can't i have a backpack in the classroom we've been doing that for years i'v been saving money not buying a locker and now all of a sudden i have to buy one this is wrong.

Well I have done my part. I forwarded the email that I received from IPetitions to News Channel 9 as well as to Joe Wingate on Fb. I hope this starts to pick up traction and really take off. This new principal has got to be stopped.

To buy uniforms for the dress code is very expensive. Plus I feel kids are so uncomfortable sitting in uniforms for 8 hours a day.

The school dress code is insane! As a student I love to go to school and be able to show who I am and be comfortable at the same time. The school is also super sexist as us girls have absolutely nothing comfortable to wear and as we are not allowed a purse or pockets will more than likely be bullied because of bleeding everywhere or having to have a tampon or pad out in the open. Like we don’t want the entire school knowing if we are on our period. This dress code is sexist and takes away our creativity. I absolutely love this school and am happy being comfortable whilst learning also we aren’t distracting anyone by wearing a T-shirt or sweatshirt and jeans. Also if people say we are “distracting” then it is not our fault that people cannot control themselves when seeing a freaking shoulder or a knee. I am highly annoyed and already hate the new principal and hope that the school doesn’t get messed up just like ooltewah. I also just want to say this principal just left ooltewah and he messed up the school and as soon as he leaves they change it back to a a less strict code so I have no clue what he was thinking.

Why stop students expressing their individuality, you are supposed to be teaching them how to be the best they possibly can surely this idea comes from someone who has come through an army type of background if someone wants to be marched around like drones then they will enlist when they are ready to .....let children have there individuality uniforms get lost and damaged children can be targeted for wearing a scruffy uniform all that you are doing is creating easy targets for bullying.
