If I wanted my child in a school with a uniform, my Husband and I would have put him in a school that had that policy. Absolutely no evidence supports a link between forced dress codes and academic success, none. Look at the top schools in the entire city, not one of them has a uniform policy. See the trend? What a disappointment East Hamilton is.

This is for the "anonymous anonymous" post below. Being friends with Principal Eller does not make you the "silent majority". If you think the dress code has to do with student academic achievement, maybe you need to conjure a little common sense. The actual majority of parents at this school are extremely disappointed by the changes that were made.

Please know that there ARE MANY parents and teachers out here that support these changes. WE are the silent majority! Kids need rules, structure and high expectations, as well as consequences. Our concerns should not be what our kids wear to school. Our main concerns should be 1. their safety, 2. their academic achievement and 3. school discipline. MANY parents have been concerned and disappointed in this school the past few years. It has become a FREE FOR ALL. Just look at test scores and EOCs. Our kids deserve better! We needed a CHANGE! As parents, let the professionals do their job and support them! Teach our children to respect authority! We are lucky to have Brent Eller at EH!

I agree with Samantha Dean, parents need to keep talking to the school to convey out issues. The high performing schools in the area do not the have the dress code, this principal is the one that introduced it to Ooltewah, countless studies have shown that a uniform/strict dress code doee not improve behaviour, performance etc and make the distinction between those with and without money more apparent. Parents need to keep fighting, as do students. We canot allow one misguided person to ruin a school.

I’ve also done some research on other schools in Hamilton County to look at their dresses codes. When you have a chance take a look at Signal Mtn, Soddy-Daisy and Sale Creek. Those (in my opinion) are some of the better schools in our district. Now the schools in our county that has a current dress code......I would NEVER send my children to! Dress code does not make a child want to learn more or have less distractions in a class room. It is a constant battle with administration because the kids DON’T want to wear them. I know this from experience with graduating from a high school that had a strict dress code. I’m of the mind set that this middle school dress code should be done away with for this entire school year and we should have PTA meetings to come to an agreement on something going forward. The best thing at this point for administration to do is get the parents back on their side.

So nice to see all of the comments on Facebook from other parents at corresponding schools. Just because they put up with a dress code that is unjust they feel like everyone else should too. Newsflash, some people move to areas to be away from that sort of thing. What a horrible move made by a new principal.

It’s trash that the dress code is stupid as hell. And o think we all have to pay for lockers like last year.

None of what he is doing makes any sense. He does not care that we have to buy 2 sets of clothes that we can't afford. My son is an upcoming Junior at EH and loves to wear cargo shorts. Well I now have to buy other types of shorts. He just does not understand what he is doing to our children. Especially the girls that can not carry a purse to carry personal products in because of his NO Backpacks or Purses in the classrooms.

Principal has updated the dress code and posted a statement on the school website. Apparently now the middle school dress code will follow the high schools until the 2nd semester. Because it makes more sense for me to buy a new wardrobe for my child for half a year...

Well it seems like nothing is being done. Still no backpacks or purses. How sexist is this. Well he better be willing to assign lockers without having to pay for school fees. Our family can not afford the school fees because of the changes to the dress code. It is BS that Cargo shorts can't be worn. What the heck is wrong with Cargo shorts or pants?

I have been contacted by a Mariah M Rock who is a Reporter for News Channel 9 because I forwarded a link to the Petition to them. Her email is [email protected]. She has asked me if I would be willing to speak with them on camera and I said I would. If this is important to you like it is to me please reach out to her so hopefuly we can get this new dress code changed back to the old one. As the new one most parents can not afford.

There are so many questions I have in regards to the new implications of this dress code. I’m not sure how you’re supposed to cover up a students tattos/piercing. And why aren’t the high schoolers allowed dress down Fridays as well. Is this a military school? Im so confused. Also on the high school side, would it not be easier to conceal a weapon in the lockers that they previously did not use? And why are females not allowed to wear purses or boots? I need an explanation on a lot of this.
