I have a 1977 vw beetle that I can't get tags for because the state still asks for smog check. The car is almost 40 years old. Come on! How can it pollute the air any different than my 1970 vw baja? They have the same motor :/

19 years old, just bought a 1979 datsun 620. It was my dads first car and i wanted to build a sort of tribute to his old truck. But i cant drive it because it failed smog. Im stuck in a corner and will probably have to cough up 5 or 6 bills to get her on the road again

My 1986 SR-5 / AE86 always tests with vastly low emissions. However, the guys testing the car disconnect one hose from my standard carb and falsely come up with timing of 10 degrees above TDC, when it is set at the factory setting of 5 degrees. That and a slightly high idle, caused my car to fail smog this year. Nothing had been done in two years to alter the timing and I only drive the car on a rare occasion. I say that if the car passes emissions. WTF does a slightly high idle and a slightly high distributor advance matter?

I'm a poor guy with a old car that does not smoke and runs well but just fail the smog test because my timing was off. The car runs perfect. It would be nice to see the 30y exemption back.

It's not fair for classic car owners to trailer queen a car just cause it don't pass smog.

i own a 77 chevy k30 and a 73 k20. literally not a difference between the trucks from the factory. doesnt make any sense to me why one is exempt and the other im forced to have in AZ

We have classic cars, one have to be smogged. It makes us hard to keep this car on the road.

I have a 1978 Toyota FJ40. This thing has clean emissions from the tailpipe. But, because I have an electronic ignition and other modifications to my engine, it wont even pass visual. B.S. California.

It's getting harder and harder to find smog parts for my car that's 33 years old! It's time they reinstated the rolling smog drop off!

The 30 year smog law should be put back in place. I have a 76 VW bus that requires a smog test which is B.S. It's all about the money for California.

I have an 86 Bronco 49 state model with only 70k original miles, but finding all the components to make the smog systems functional is difficult. Those systems were only band aid fixes by the manufacturers at the time. I can make my bronco run cleaner than new with some of today's aftermarket injection and ignition products.

It was ridiculous for them to repeal the law like that. These cars age and and it's harder for them to keep up with the increasingly strict standards. It's unfair.

My car is a 1977, I drive it less than 300 miles per year. In fact pre 1985 vehicles on the road today account for less than 1/2 of a percent of all cars on the road. Most are owned by collectors such as myself who don't drive these cars very much. They don't make up even a fraction of the pollution you are worried about. Please make it easier on us who have to jump through all kinds of hoops every other year to get our older classics smogged.

Allow vehicles that are a part of history and which old parts are unattainable to stay on the road.

I have a 1981 Datsun that thankfully has always passed smog every two years but I do worry about the time when it won't and I hope that never happens. When a car hits 30 years old it should be exempt from smogging. For a lot of us that car is no longer a daily driver but a toy to take out for joy rides and car shows. Enact the 30 year law now!

Who cares what engine and/or aftermarket parts are on a 30 year old vehicle as long as it passes that year smog requirements from the tail pipe (s). In most cases, these are cleaner than the originals still out there.

30 years works for me, most cars that age are off the road anyway.

1986 Toyota Corolla SR-5. The original carbureted engine is out and is being replaced with a fuel injected engine from a 1989 Toyota MR-2.

I have a 1976 VW Bug that was my first car, that I have owned for over 20 years that I still have to get smogged. It gets more and more challenging to smog this car which means I may not be able to drive it any more. I wish Arnold Schwarzenegger had been wiser before creating this exemption.

Forcing us to smog our cars dicatates what is considered a classic and historical vehicle. Cars from our generation aren't appreciated the way they should be by smog laws and the way they are set up. It is ridiculous how expensive it is to get an older vehicle smog checked down in San Diego. I own a 1978 C20 with a 350 and spent damn near $100 just to do a smog check for registration I don't want to pay that every 2 years. Not to mention that most of the smog gear that was put onto that truck was ripped out or just bypassed to give it the true classic muscle sound and feel.

Our vehicles do less harm than our government. Stop charging and robbing people of their money. A yearly fee is ridiculous. Let us be free.

Even the rolling year like other states would be a good start again.

My truck will be 30 years old soon and has been in the family the whole time. Licencing fees keep climbing and the smog program seems intent on failing people because inspectors think a replacement part is an illegal modification.

The number of old cars on the road today is very minimal compared to new cars. If the vehicle is 30+ years old then there is a strong chance that the owner of that vehicle want to keep it as long as fisicaly possible. Also all the new cars on the road are very boring designs. Nothing set them apart any more.

Keep old cars around, they need love too!

It is far better for the environment to keep one car working for 40+ years than replacing a car every 5 years. For ever single American family typically have 2 cars and if they are replacing them every 5 years that is 12 cars in 30 years that end up needing to be dealt with for scrap or leaking our into the environment simply for they don't want it anymore. Encouraging people to take care of and maintain 1 car to LAST save the environment and reduces our carbon footprint for less cars need to be made. Less junck cars will be road hazzareds and that can save lives! Small encentives like this can encourage people to take better care of what they have and see the importance of quality over quantity.

This bill was repealed because poiticians' like Jerry Brown want us all to stop driving and take mass transit. Tester want to charge me twice as much to test my old 30 year vehicle as they do to test my new one. Why should people who take care and maintain their older vehicles have to pay. There are not enough old vehicles out there to matter. Vancouver Canada one of the most congested cities on the planet. Stopped smog testing on all vehicles. Because most vehicles do not pollute anymore. I think this is just another cash cow for the California politicians.

My F-100 is 42 years old , I bought it new, still have to smog, I was recently pulled over and ask if I would like to participate in an road smog check, your kidding me right, the amount of vehicles required to set up this smog check pollute more than my truck in 5 years, I drive less than 1500 miles a year, and like someone here said my truck always passes but it to the point nobody even knows how to smog it.

Have a 79 jeep. Was told at a smog station they would not do 70's cars. Took and passed perfect. There is not enough cars 30 and over to make a dent in smog , and a lot have been restored to good running condition.

I still drive my 1979 Chevy C10, Short Bed. Passes smog every two years, but it is 41 years old! How many 1979 vehicles dis you see driving on the freeways everyday lately?

Some states are doing away with smog program all together because the air is significantly cleaner than it was in the 70s-80s and the majority of newer cars are not going to let it get worse again.

This is the only fair act California could ever achieve again. Any vehicle domestic or import should be exempt after 30 years. Even now 35 year old imports are still better on smog than older classic carbonated cars. It’s just never made any sense. Especially as parts are harder and harder to come by for any car 30 years or older. Classify any car as a classic after 30 years. Especially if driven less than 5,000 miles a year. Even the 30 year exemption was already much harsher than other states that stop vech. smog tests after 20 to 24 years. Also remember Florida & Washington voters stopped smog testing 3 + years back. about half of North Carolina is now smog exempt now. What Arnold S. signed in also hurts the poor and Sr. Citizens

The majority of cars that are over 30 years old are very well taken care of and if they're like mine pass the smog test every time easily, in fact the technician always tells me that the data on the test is cleaner than most of the newer cars. California is the only state to my current knowledge that does not continue to give older vehicles smog except status...Other states with smog emissions like Oregon allow for vehicles that reach a certain age to become smog exempt. With the continuing rise in the cost of living in California purchasing a new vehicle that passes these restrictive smog laws is not economically feasible.
