Hello! My name is Carlyn Head and I am a senior at Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, NC. For my graduation project I have been researching Treatment of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. By signing this pledge you are giving your word to:

-Remove the use of the R-word (retarded) from your vocabulary. It is in every sense outdated and derogatory.

- Begin to use "person first language" when referring to an individual with an intellectual disability instead of "my autistic friend" use "my friend with autism", it's less of a label and more of an aspect

- Commit to being an advocate for people with intellectual disabilities. By embracing our differences and making the conscious decision to use "I care" language we can achieve the goal of having a socially aware society.

Please sign your name and LEAVE YOUR STATE IN THE COMMENT SECTION. I am hoping to collect signatures from across the country to make this message wide spread various communities. Thank you so much for your help!

xx

Carlyn

I love this. I have worked in special education for 26 years. I believe people are learning to do this but we still have a ways to go. Thank you for this project!

My brother had a motorcyle accident and as a result, a brain injury. He's had major issues that escalated to the court systems and they also need education. There's a deficit in the care of persons with metal disabilities when it comes to law enforcement and the judiciary.

Keep up the good work. I haven't used the R word in so long and I always try to redirect people to use person-first language when appropriate. Good Luck from Virginia

Fantastic project! I have been using this language/approach for years...starting around 1994 when I corrected a physician who said something like "Next we'll see the diabetic in room 6..." and I said, "You mean Mrs Smith, the lady with diabetes?" That turned a few heads...and I'm proud of it. Keep up the great work!!
