I always got a big smile when I would see Carlester along West St. He was always working to keep the street clean. He has a big heart.

It would be a true shame if he was not recognized.

He deserves the recognition, he's a staple of Annapolis. I have memories of seeing him as far back as i can remember. It was almost like where's Waldo as a kid looking for him walking down the street. Put a statue of him somewhere as if he were walking with the trashbag in tow.

Happy Charlie as my parents and I affectionately called him absolutely deserves to be memorialized by Annapolis. My parents and I moved to Annapolis in 1982 and my very first memory of being there was seeing him walk down the street with his bags and the biggest smile on his face waving at everybody that went by. He was something you could rely on and is absolutely an icon of that town.

Seeing Carlester everyday in the 1980s & 90s is a lovely memory for me!

Yes! One-thousand times YES! Carlester has always been mainly known to me as the West Street Walker. If you think of the history of Annapolis, dating back to its substantial role in slave trade, it’s part in the Underground Railroad, and the one-time capital of the United States, what could be more symbolic of a welcoming city which has always stressed protecting the environment, than erecting a statue to a man who has dedicated his adult life to keeping West Street clean? And add on how Carlester is as much an Annapolis icon as the State House, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, or the Chesapeake Bay, and he is worthy! Let’s do the damn thing!

I grew up in Annapolis (1962-1976) and remember him well.

He kept West street clean and mowed. He needs a holiday in his honor.
