As a nurse who has worked as a Home Care Coordinator trying to place people into Personal Care Homes (PCH), and also as a nurse in a Personal Care Home in the area, I have seen first-hand the struggle that families have waiting for a PCH spot for their loved one. With the aging of baby boomers, the need for PCH beds is steadily increasing. As the 3rd largest city in Manitoba, we have a large population of aging adults. The shortage of personal care home beds is only going to get more desperate, as more and more baby boomers need the additional care. People deserve the respect to receive a bed in the community in which they have spent their entire lives, and have family, friends and other loved ones.

I was blessed to have what we would all consider the norm and my Grandmothers were both in Steinbach PCH. But that was some time ago and it is heartbreaking to hear of friends driving far and wide to comfort parents/grandparents. The need is immediate as the baby boomers are aging.

With an elderly Dad, 92 years, I am aware that there are shortages of spaces for care in our local area. Should he need care, the chances are good that he would have to be placed somewhere at a distance where I will be unable to visit on a regular basis, or help him.

We need more personal care beds and facilities now. Can you imagine when the baby boom generation (current age 61-72) start requiring them? We'll need considerably more. Better start now!

Many of our elders have lived in Steinbach and immediate area most or all of their lives. When they are no longer able to care for themselves, placement in a nursing home is likely the only option. Now imagine after being a life long resident of Steinbach, there is no room for you when you most need it and so are sent to Vita or Morris or Grunthal. Your elderly spouse may not drive a car any longer, how does the spouse get to visit their sweetheart regularly, let alone their elderly friends?

I have heard many stories about the long waiting time needed before a placement is found. This is totally unfair to all our seniors. We need to invest in the future and we to do it now. The population of Canada is growing.

Let's keep in mind that it's our senior citizens of today that have worked and paid for much of where our country is today. Now in far to many cases their reward is to live in conditions related/ equal to those of a third world, poor housing, poor health, poor help.Maybe ... Just maybe, we should help our own as much as we help others.
