Study halls and lunches at Niles West are often used as free time where students can socially interact and have a break from school. Recently Niles West has not been allowing students to play cards during study hall. Cards during study hall was a great way for students to positively interact with each other. Although the school believes that gamboling may be issues while playing cards, throughout my 2 years at Niles West I have never seen gamboling as in issue throughout playing cards and it is clear that it is not an issue. Another issue the school may see through playing cards is that it is not educational and students should be focused on school work. Although currently when cards are not allowed in study Hall and I look around my study hall and only a handful of students are doing school work. The rest of the students are watching Netflix, going on their phones, or talking with peers. This is another issue that the school may see with cards in study hall, although with out cards students will just do uneducational things on technology which they have enough throughout the school day.
I believe students should be able to play cards in study hall because they give them a break from school and it is a positive way to interact with their peers. Both me and a majority of the student body here at Niles West feel that playing cards in study hall has a positive impact to this school. And hopefully the school board can take this petition into consideration in changing the rule on cards in study hall.

Updates

September 9, 2019

I really never expected this to snowball quite so fast but here we are and it just proves that I am not the only person who thinks these rules make zero sense. It feels strange seeing so many people agree about something as small as a deck of cards but this momentum is actually pretty wild and I guess it means the administration might finally have to listen to us.

First of all... I want it in my butt... but also I want cards because that would actually make people social instead of us just being on our phones...

School is not prison. It is not Puritan England.
