Keep the kilts at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts

Banning uniform kilts promotes objectification and sexualization of female bodies as it blames the wearer for the onlooker's perceptions and actions which only perpetuates rape culture rather than teaching the importance of respect and equality. Regardless of whether a female wears a kilt or pants, she is still prone to sexual harassment if the community is not actively promoting respect and equality. This includes the support of female confidence and self-respect.

The kilt is an important part of the cultural identity of the school.

I loved the Carter kilt! It was so unique compared to the kilts in other schools of the TCDSB, and wearing it was like telling the world, "yes, I go to this wonderful arts school and am passionate about what I do!". It was definitely not just a uniform piece, it was a symbol of pride and an expression of love for the arts. I'm saddened by this initiative because Carter is such a nurturing, accepting place that encourages everyone to express themselves freely. Firstly I feel like there are definitely bigger issues at Carter to focus on than the kilt. Also, I feel like this issue is not just about its perceived inappropriateness and consequent "dangers"; banning the kilt because it's short lengths are distracting or offensive to onlookers is just normalizing rape culture and teaching girls to cover up, and if not then they are responsible for being objectified/sexualized. Instead of coddling hypersensitivity and banning the kilt, which doesn't do anything to tackle this societal issue, admin should take more steps to educate students about these kinds of things to prevent the sexualization of young girls. And seeing as the protocol for TCDSB dress code policies was not followed by Carter admin in making this decision is just even more frustrating.

As a community, we need to learn to handel things, not get punnished by them

I love the kilt and my daughter wears it the way it is meant to be worn. All of the girls should not be penalized for the few who wear their kilts inappropriately. Those who do not respect the guidelines for how the uniform should be worn should be reprimanded in an appropriate manner. Please reconsider removing the kilt from the uniform and implement better measures to ensure the young women who wear them respect the uniform and most importantly themselves. Thank you.
