You may not know it but there are dozens of instances in Australia - and across the world - in which people who hit and kill or seriously injure someone and then leave the scene get off with a slap on the wrist. One person leading the push for change is Jeynelle Dean-Hayes. Her son Tyler Dean was killed in a hit and run. The person responsible was acquitted. Tears for Tyler - about Tyler Dean and other victims - will be released on September 18. If you want to help change laws so that people who use a vehicle as a weapon are given a tougher sentence than a fine or a very short period behind bars you can sign this petition, purchase a copy of the book or a wristband to support the cause. The stories shared by those affected by these tragic incidents remain a powerful reminder of why legislative reform is necessary. I am currently coordinating with legal advocates to ensure our concerns are presented clearly to the appropriate authorities.

The momentum behind this petition highlights the urgent need for a serious reevaluation of our sentencing laws. It is clear that many people recognize the fundamental unfairness currently facing families who have lost loved ones to hit and run incidents.

Too many drivers think they can just drive off. Hit and run should be treated same as murder, plain and simple.

murder is murder, whether a gun or car is used, fix the lenient sentences to those who kill by car when impaired or distracted
