The government should cancel the Junior Cert in 2021 due to the disruption of Covid-19, this has had a huge impact on the studying of many.
We’ve been drastically impacted by so many months out of school- and those of us who can least afford it are paying the price. Many young people from disadvantaged backgrounds have faced extreme difficulties with many lacking the access of internet, computers, textbooks, stationery, ect. Many students do not have a proper learning environment, therefore results will most certainly not reflect the true efforts of pupils.
We’re under enormous pressure to catch up on 4 months of lost education,many of us students feel very overwhelmed and at the total breaking point with the amount of work we have to do.
Lots of countries use other methods of evaluating a students will to do well. Exams have been proven for many years to be very unfair and an unnatural way of testing someone’s knowledge, in many cases it triggers someone’s flight or fight reflex.Things like assignments or big projects show a students creativity, motivation and care and can be applied much more easily to real life and how we would do in the real life, if our government took advice/examples from fellow countries we would be much better off.
The government in Scotland and Wales have already canceled ALL exams in 2021, so why can’t our government cancel our exams we have been impacted just as much as they have.
Hence why I am making this petition and writing to the government to cancel the Junior Cert and to provide predicted grades to show the true reflections of students across the country.
Hopefully this will catch the attention of the government and Norma Foley!
