No senior project

I believe that, based on the number of days we have had to cancel this year alone, we should be pardoned of our senior capstone project. We have already cancelled school for a number of days in light of PG&E power shut-offs in our area, however what is happening at this time must be considered as the final nail in the coffin. According to the OUSD page, schools will be closed through May 1 of this year at the very least in light of COVID-19, though I predict that it will be extended further than that. Assuming school does resume May 2, then that doesn’t leave us very much time to complete our projects. In light of that, we have been told to continue with our projects while we are under a stay-at-home order. Let that sink in for a moment. We are in a period of worldwide crisis as we struggle with adapting to our situation be it financially, in terms of our resources, or mentally. At this time, we are undoubtedly worried for those whom we hold dear and our futures, yet despite all of this, we are still somehow expected to complete our capstone projects, and this doesn’t take into account those that don’t have access to the resources needed to do so. While I am certain that the majority of you understand the severity of the crisis we are in, allow me to point out a few things to those who may not. In the Bay Area, there have been 2,645 positive cases for COVID-19 and 67 deaths resulting from it and there is still no available cure. As such, the best we can do is adhere to the stay-at-home order. Changing gears however, I would like to bring something to the forefront of everyone’s minds, be they student, teacher, or administrator. We, the graduating class of this year, as was required, signed a contract that stated we would complete our senior capstone project-among other things-in exchange for the opportunities of going to Prom and graduating. Given the severity of COVID-19, it is more than likely that these events will be canceled. Our senior trip to Sant

It is unfair to cancel all of our senior events, but still make us do a project. Most of us seniors haven’t and will continue to not receive the support we need for this project. Some students don’t even have access to the internet during this crisis, so it would be unfair to them if the didn’t get the same opportunity to pass. By canceling this project, it shows that admin is on our side and sees some of the challenges we face by getting the rest of our year canceled.

Having a senior project that is mandatory in order for us seniors to graduate is unfair and unnecessary especially in this time of a pandemic that has taken over. People are having a difficult time and struggling with it and don’t have time to even worry about a project and teachers and the administrators or making a project seem more important than the current issue we are in right now. In addition to that most students don’t even have the resources to even complete it and that shouldn’t be a reason for someone not to graduate and to take that away from someone is selfish when they have already worked so hard for the years in high school to get to the point of graduation. And for there to be uncertainty of there even being a graduation and still enforcing seniors to complete the project just isn’t right.

At this point, the senior project and capstone is unnecessary. Students are busy trying to figure how to find funding for college expenses in the fall and AP students are busy self studying for the AP tests that we HAD to pay for in the fall to even get AP credit. Not only that, we aren't getting REAL teacher support and are stuck here doing heaps of assignments. Quarantine isn't just us chilling, we still have lives going on and assignments to catch up on. The senior capstone is not just an in-class project, it's something with actual guidelines that the seniors don't understand since it was so poorly managed this year. AP Lit students never even got support for the essays, we were initially under the impression that we were excused and the actual classes we were supposed to get support from did nothing but provide busy work that did not make the senior capstone guidelines any easier to understand. A lot of the seniors I've talked to are overly stressed and worried that the capstone is going to affect their ability to graduate. Give us a break. The response to this wouldn't have been this bad if admin had communicated what they expected from us in the beginning of the year, instead of brushing students off and giving us half-assed comments when we asked about the senior project. Now, a lot of students don't have access to computers or resources to reach out to for their civic action piece and interviews, which are deemed necessary by at least one of the capstone teachers I know. Recorded presentations are also ridiculous, since a lot of us live with extensive amount of family members and cannot find the time and place to be able to record a peaceful and non-invasive presentation. Getting rid of slides does nothing. Either reduce the capstone to just the essay or get rid of it entirely. Seniors aren't being difficult. We're having a hard time already because of the quarantine and additional stress of transitioning into post-secondary education. As admin of either

I know the Teachers are doing all that they can but, the students are at a disadvantage with the lack of access to technology and instruction. Graduation should not be based on the completion of the Capstone Project based on the environmental issues we are facing currently.

As a senior I believe it’s unfair to have the school make us do a senior project when we aren’t even attending school. Our senior wasn’t supposed to end like this. We’ve been sad, stressed, annoyed over the fact we are spending the end of our senior year like this. We aren’t at fault. It’s only fair that instead, you guys try and help us enjoy if we can the rest of our school year.

I don’t think my kid should do this due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
