Cancel midterms. We have missed too much school most of my teachers are not caught up with the curriculum

Anvitha, I totally understand where you are coming from. It was not my objective to completely dismiss the necessity of testing. My approach was to take the opportunity to express the futileness in the way way testing is implemented and the way our education system is structured. And while I don't claim to have all the ideas to usher in a new era of change, I do know that it has to surely start somewhere. Regardless, I do agree with what you're saying. I tried not to bring in the arguments about additional testing and potential snow days for the sheer reason that I expected more people to raise this point; my aim was to target an even bigger issue that I find that we, as students, fall victims to. Thank you for your input and it is definitely heartening to see so much support and passion that fuels this petition. However, I do not want to condone laziness on part of the student body. If this petition ever does succeed (and I certainly hope it does), it does not give us the right to throw away all that we have gotten the opportunity to learn and experience the past 4-5 months. I have worked hard throughout the entire first semester of school, and this hard work has paid off; I am very proud of the grade averages I have maintained. A midterm, even if I do well and get an A on it, will bring many of my grades down because of their current averages. It's unfair how heavily the exam is weighted, especially when it can only hurt many students' grades. I strongly believe midterms should be optional as they were last year. This way, if a student is relying on the midterm to bring their grade up, they should be allowed to take it. If a student is proud of where their grade currently stands, one test should not be allowed to ruin months of studying for various tests and quizzes, especially when there hasn't been sufficient time to prepare for this one test. We have not had a proper A day since before winter break. Therefore, I do not even know what the midterms are in 4/7 of my classes, two of which are AP. Meanwhile, because of the snow days, there are still many second quarter tests I have yet to take. These tests continue to be pushed back, which is obstructing time for teachers to help prepare and inform students for the midterm because many classes are still preparing for second quarter assessments. Please consider all these reasons. Students are not petitioning for the cancellation of midterms because they are lazy, rather they are petitioning because they do not want to see an unfair test overshadow months of earned successes. Cancel midterms

I forgot everything I've learned from algebra, I could use review time. Plus, I haven't had a German class in a long time, and my last sub didn't know any german. If some of the petitioners could, I'm sure some of the middle schoolers who take high school courses would agree.

I believe it would be the best for the students to cancel midterms. We have not been able to learn and get the material we need for the midterms due to weather. Also, winter break recently ended, but we basically missed another week of school because of the snow. Most students have most likely forgotten all the material we need to know and some of the teachers did not show up as well...

Though we are not prepared for the upcoming midterms, these tests still give us a good understanding of which areas in school we need to focus or study more on. If anything, I believe that students should still have to take the midterms, but each student individually should have the right to decide whether or not the midterm grade is kept. That way, if a student scored exceptionally well on the midterm, he or she could use the score to improve their overall grade in the class. If he or she did poorly, however, then the score would not be counted against them.

Here are some REALISTIC reason why midterm should be canceled 1. All our tests, labs, and projects have been delayed. In other words, all those major grade works will now be due probably either Thursday or Friday, since Tues and Wed will mostly be review days for those big grade works. Thus, students only get four days to really study for their midterm: Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and ONE of the days during the midterm week (like if your midterm on Calc is on Thurs, you will only get really Wed to study) 2. Like many said, why do we have to risk bringing our grades down dramatically and perhaps even ruin our college admission? It wasn't our fault, nor the county's fault that we had so many snow days. VDOT failed to clean the roads etc. in time. Why must we be held responsible for VDOT's fault? 3. We didn't have proper B Days either. Two hour delay last Friday. We only had a proper B Day on Monday last week. Even that B Day was used to teach new contents not for Midterms. 4. 40% chance of snow Wed, 50% Thurs this week 5. Most people who want Midterm gone are those with good grads...meaning academically great students. Are these people lazy? Certainly not. They have worked day and night to raise their grades up to what they have now. Having a midterm after all the weather issues, missed classes and delayed assignments will only ruin their accomplishments. If seniors get bad scores and colleges reject them after getting their midyear reports, will the county be responsible for them? I wrote this quickly so sorry for the poor grammar

Students can't afford to spend snow days to study midterms. They use them to study for postponed unit tests, quizzes, projects, and labs that are more immediate. Simple logic. Since all students will most likely have to spend their time studying for their postponed big grade works til at least Thursday now, we only have like four days to study for midterm. Six months of contents on seven subjects in four days? Haha
