As much as I believe it would be a better option to have online exams, i don't think we should be discarding on campus exams altogether - perhaps it should be an option for everyone to choose. We have to keep in mind that many students that currently live in developing countries do not have access to a proper internet connection. Some students do not have the necessary hardware to undergo online exams (no webcam, broken keyboard, no laptops, no mics, etc...) - we must keep in mind that there is a digital divide. For the such students, coming to do the test in person may be their only option. We should not forget that many students also do not have a suitable area at home to do the test - it may be that they live in studios or small apartments with their families, hence this implies more distractions and in turn lower scores. In terms of equality, standardising to MCQ as well as essay questions can be done successfully for both online and offline exams. The only exception here would be math (but even in this case an MCQ exam could be standardized with the option of sending images of the working). Again, im all in for making it our decision to choose where we do the test - but it is not a rational option to completely cancel campus exams as some of us depend on them. In this way, those who don't want to take the risk of going to campus (which is completely understandable) don't have to. Those who attend the on campus exams would be taking the exam at their own risk.

Regardless of the social distance, putting students in the room, even with some distance, is still dangerous. Please consider our health, the safety and well-being of your students takes precedence.

In my opinion, KU Leuven is being stubborn and inconsiderate. It is not just the exam auditorium itself but students have to use public transportation (bus, train etc.) to get to the campus.

All my friends and acquaintances attending other universities told me that their exams have either been moved online (for all students) or cancelled and normal activities will only take place in July the earliest and this timeline is even uncertain. I really do not understand KU Leuven's insistence on having on-campus exams.

If the university is willing to conduct on-campus exams, then they MUST be willing to accept responsibility in whatever health hazard (e.g. some people getting infected during the exam month) which might include FINANCIAL DAMAGES.
So ask them this question first, and if they are not willing to 100% bear that potential responsibility, then we as students CAN NOT be asked to also risk ourselves by being forced to attend exams on campus, against our wishes, as apparent with this petition.

An on-site examination is definitely not worth risking my life or long-term health. The questionnaire provided by KULeuven, only asking about our whereabouts and whether/not we are capable of attending on-site exams is not adequate. It doesn't consider our current health status, our underlying problems, the people we are sharing a house with, commuting risk, family health issues, stress, etc. How are we supposed to sit on exam when all we worry about is catching the virus. Studying right now is already difficult enough.

Given the fact that so much is still unknown about the virus (both for symptomatic and asymptomatic infections), it would be BEST to NOT risk an infection. Especially since there is currently no vaccine nor medicine. Recent research even show people having lung damage despite showing no symptoms. I certainly DO NOT want to risk my LONG-TERM health just for attending an on-site exam, especially when it can clearly be done online.

Very dangerous to make exames happen in such deadly situation. We are looking at lockdowns until vaccinations which is the only option for us to live normal again or suffer deadlt casualties.

The chances of getting exposed to the virus is pretty high when you have to commute for a whole month on a public transport. The university officials have to ask themselves is it worth it to make the exams on campus while increasing the chances of exposing healthy students to the virus. Health comes first, if you don’t live what purpose does your education serve.

I understand the university if working hard to organize this exam session in a complicated time. But they're asking to base our future/careers based on no information or absolutely vague information. Our parents are out of work, students are out of work. We have to study in noisy environments, no calm libraries are available with non-lagging internet. Some of us have one PC for the whole family with relatives having to work through webcam with their colleagues. Finances are an everyday concern. Health & safety is an everyday concern. Stress levels are through the roof. Hundreds of people are dying every day to a disease that governments have called "the worst crisis since WW2". We do not have any information on how online exams will be. Written exams are decades old, online are not. Could we have a mock week to test out the system? Two members of my family are immune sensitive. And because i am Belgian i have to risk their lives to pass an exam? What kind of conditions is this to succeed? The list can go on and on. These are difficult times, and we need to find a better compromise than the one in place. Belgian students have the right to be tested in the same health & safety conditions as students abroad. It is not in the university's advantage to have many failing students either, otherwise this creates an unbalance for years to come. It is in everyone's advantage to have access to more information. I need to study, i will stop here. Have a nice day.
