I declined 3 other great offers because of Microsoft’s reputation for empowerment. Microsoft has a (well deserved) reputation for doing the right thing. This last minute change significantly impacts my financial situation, and worse, calls into question Microsoft’s commitment to empowering others.

Accepted this internship mainly cause the pay will help me pay for my tuition. With the pay cut I either got to find a new job or take more loans to pay my tuition.
Never thought Microsoft would make such a last minute decision knowing how it will impact many interns.

Declined interviews with companies on par with Microsoft as I was content with my return offer financially and honestly thought that Microsoft wouldn't make any last minute contract changes on me. So much for that I guess.

I turned down several offers for Microsoft, and depended on the salary for tuition and financial independence from my toxic family. With the pay cut, I may be forced to depend on them which is really detrimental to my mental health.

Microsoft's decision to reduce pay feels like a slap in the face - after talking about global equity and a positive culture, to treat Canadians as less than, puts an asterisk next to their words. Souring our impression of Microsoft and to recognize that their spiels of culture are more talk than truth dampens our impression and those of future interns and FTEs.
From a financial perspective, as a low-income student I relied heavily on the original offer letter Microsoft offered to plan out my 2021 and graduation. By cutting our salaries, Microsoft has stifled our futures, because if I can't afford tuition and rent, I'll be unable to go to school next year.
I'm extremely disappointed Microsoft would decide to take this decision. Our value should be decided by the work we do and where we're working. By cutting our pay Microsoft is effectively saying that we're worth less than Americans doing the same job. This has truly made me reconsider Microsoft and their validity of their values.

I was extremely thankful to receive such an offer but suddenly realizing that I am joining an organization which values their US interns more to pay them higher than their Canadian interns who are equally doing the same work remotely is absolutely not fair. I really hope this gets reconsidered as this greatly affects the incoming class of interns and any future interns Microsoft hopes to recruit.
