When I originally signed my offer with Microsoft, I was also fielding offers from other large FAANGs and unicorns. Last year, the company I was working with cut my salary in half two weeks before the internship began, and this greatly soured my experience with them. I felt disposable, and that my work was meaningless. So when I got the return offer from Microsoft (who I worked with before last summer), I felt reassured by their previous actions and even told them that trusting the offer they made is a big part of why I signed. Now, I feel that trust completely broken. I cried after I got my revised offer because it feels like the work I do is once again not valued, and that I’ll be expected to do the exact same thing I would’ve otherwise but this time for half the salary. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.

I would like to express that I am not disappointed about the pay cut, in fact, Microsoft could have paid me minimum wage and I would have been content.
The disappointment comes from lack of transparency and communication. Had the potential decision of pay cuts been communicated to us as early as August, I would have understood. But making a drastic decision like this, 2 months before internship starts has left a bad taste in my mouth. Now I fear if Microsoft actually embodies all its values, or are they just for show.
Since the pandemic was not a surprise this year, I am positive that we could have been informed about the pay cuts earlier as many of the returning interns signed the offer as early as August. I hope that Microsoft realises the opportunity cost of this decision that interns like myself have faced, we could have pursued other opportunities had the pay deduction been communicated in advance.
This may not seem to be a big deal for such a big organization. But as an intern, I rely on summer internships to help pay for my tuition and student loans. Loosing about $14k is a big amount for me. I used have a part time job as a receptionist at the career center at my university. But since universities have switched to remote learning, my position has been removed. Like a lot of the population, I am struggling to keep up. I hope my story puts in perspective the impact pay reduction will have on many students like myself.
I also want to say, I was very loyal towards Microsoft, especially since Microsoft, as a company embodied its values for fair wages. But after this incident, my faith in Microsoft has been shook. For the first time, I felt like I am just a business transaction.
I dont expect Microsoft to honor the initial contract, because if that were the intentions, new contacts wouldn't have been drafted with different amounts. But I am just asking for a rational explanation for singling out Canadian interns when it comes to lowe
