Thank you for reading this letter and taking into consideration our input. Personally I have always relied on my internship salaries and part-time jobs to pay my tuition and living expenses. This was always possible even with lower Canadian salaries in previous years because those internships were 4 months long. In August I tried looking for other offers but I was told by my recruiter that I had to sign the offer by end of August, I making it nearly impossible to consider other options while still keeping my Microsoft options open, hence, given my great experience this summer, I chose to sign with Microsoft. Since then I’ve had other opportunities however I’ve turned them down knowing I had signed a good offer that would allow me not to work part-time during my next year of studies. With this new offer, my best bet is to accept an internship for Fall 2021 in order to financially support myself for the upcoming year. The better alternative will working and completing my degree, at the cost of my education and mental health. Knowing this could have been avoided by signing another offer puts me in a very difficult position when considering my future with Microsoft. It is extremely easy disheartening to be forced to make a decision based on finances rather than my passions and values at the age of 21. I sincerely hope you consider our points and reconsider this drastic pay cut for my own future and the future of the Microsoft intern program.

I was very dependent on this salary since I have already made plans based on it and I know many people as well. If we would have know that there would be a possibility of a pay-cut, I think many of us would have taken action based off the worst-case salary. Learning about the pay cut very late during the year gives interns no options.

I believe that it is unfair to reduce intern pay for Canadians, as the salary listed prior affected how I was going to plan my finances in my last year of studies and potentially the year following. Given this large salary cut, I need to rethink many aspects about moving back to my University when COVID ends.

I turned down an offer in favour of Microsoft, thinking I had made an investment decision with my career. After the poor communication and pay cut by half (in CAD value) I feel regretful becsause I was reminded of Microsoft's intention to cut/control costs. This transaction was a clear message that I was disposable, and you knew I had little options.
Unless my experience exceedingly makes up for this dissapointing experience, I unfortunately will have move on to another organisation which treated its employees better during the tough times of covid.

I depend on my Summer earnings to pay my tuition and rent. Having my salary halved without any warning whatsoever changes drastically my economical situation. I am personally hurt about the fact the Microsoft notified us too late on the game. Many of us turned down offers with a higher salary than the one currently offered. That income difference would have made a big difference in my graduation year.

I reneged an offer from a company with a competitive compensation. Similarly, my pay was cut last year on a short notice with another large company which was not ideal, but since they were handling the COVID situation in real time it seemed fair. However, given that Microsoft had more time to prepare for this virtual internship they should have honoured the precedent they set last year or at least have been more transparent about the pay cut. While I am incredibly grateful for this internship, I am now forced to find other means of paying for school and other related expenses.

I really thought Microsoft could be the company I end up working at for life because everyone always talked about how amazing the culture is. Having experienced such a fun internship last year and being welcomed into the organization despite the hurdles of the pandemic, I thought Microsoft really valued every single of its employees including interns. This decision of cutting Canadian interns salary in half really gets me thinking if all the previous efforts are just corporate decisions made for corporate social strategies. Would really love to hear that this is just a miscommunication and Canadian interns are valued just as much as our American counterparts.
