I honestly cannot believe I am typing this but the council finally committed to the expansion and we actually won. Seeing all 185 of you stick with this even when things seemed completely stuck has been wild and I am just sitting here staring at my screen in total shock. …

Elm Wood School, part of the Gipsy Hill Federation, is a popular local school which has been judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted. In September 2011 only a handful of children without a brother or sister already at the school have received places to start reception. In 2012 the situation is even worse: there are already more than 30 siblings expected to apply for places, meaning that children without a sibling have virtually no chance of getting in to the school, no matter how close they live, and even some siblings will be turned away because of the lack of space. This means Elm Wood is no longer able to effectively serve the local community. We are petitioning Lambeth Council and the Department for Education to secure funding and intelligently plan for the expansion of Elm Wood Primary School to two form entry. We have the support of the leadership team and the executive head teacher of the Federation.

I really thought this might just fizzle out but the momentum lately has been honestly incredible because it shows how many families are actually feeling the squeeze right now. It is wild to think about how far this has come since I was just frustrated at my kitchen table trying to figure out where my own kid might end up going. I am still processing this surge of energy but let us keep pushing because the council needs to see that we are not just going to go away quietly.

My son missed out and we live 2 minutes away. It is ridiculous that we have to look for schools miles from home when there is a perfectly good one right here.

ELM WOOD NEEDS TO GROW. The area is packed with young families and we deserve better local options.

Expand the school now. Its an outstanding school so obviously everyone wants to go there. Lambeth council needs to sort this out.

So frustrating. Families shouldnt have to stress this much about primary school spots.

Simple fix. Funding for a 2 form entry is a no brainer.

So many kids in our area are getting left behind. Please let the school expand.
