First it was the purchase of a shower and bathroom trailer "for the camps" that had the secondary purpose of being used during the State Fair. How have those worked out? Is it because of the successful use of them on camp property that we now face the suggestion of not cutting the grass due to the cost of fuel? Was it the same board member who made both recommendations?

The name is Staplecamp FIELD....there is a reason for this. It is not Staplecamp MEADOW. A field in Scouting terms has a specific purpose for Scouting activities it is not merely a natural area to be admired. The field should be mowed to invite units to use it for Scouting activities. If it is not mowed, it looks like an area that is not to be used by the units and it becomes more and more impractical for use as stated by others above. I thought we wanted to ENCOURAGE more use of our camps not DISCOURAGE use. Short-sighted to save a penny now and lose a buck later. Mow Staplecamp Field.

Southern District Commissioner I am appalled that a board member would suggest we don't mow the grass. We need to have that open area mowed which gets a lot of use.

If the district chooses to further neglect Staplecamp field, they send a strong concise message that all who sacrifice time and talent should choose to stop caring as well. These careless actions and neglect of attention to detail will continue to erode the fabric of our common goal of the values of Scouting.

Time for one of these. “In my day” stories. I’m an Eagle Scout (‘74) and in my day back in the 1960’s they had horses in a corral behind Staplekamp. They did a decent job of keeping the grass down and we got to ride horses. The staff men or the Ranger did the rest.

Definitely now the grass, why wouldn't you? We have other councils that use our camp, don't we want to make a good impression. Not mowing will do nothing but reduce the amount of scouts coming out and enjoying the wonderful camp we have. Keep it mowed!!!

There is no reason this area should not be kept cut. Camping areas should always be maintained first.

Maybe offer adults training on how to use the equipment at the camps so we can volunteer to help with these projects

This is not how we should look to save a few dollars. The appearance of our camps is one of the biggest selling points for getting units to use them. If the grass is long, units will stop coming to use camp. That spirals into more lost revenue, which means the camps continue to operate in the red, then they become too much of a drain on the council budget. Humm, where have I heard this before. Let our rangers take care of the properties they are responsible for. MOW THE GRASS!

This Field is so much of what makes this Camp. I am a Proud Tiger to Eagle whose Pack and Troop has used this Field for countless Activities. I have seen the most amazing Vampires and District/Council Events. It is where we celebrated Order of the Fellowship when I was Chief and Youth Leader/Advisor. Just like the Cabins... We need to challenge the Status Quo that is swiftly diminishing a true treasure.
