Calling for better winter road maintenance on the remainder of Highway 19A.

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND:

Whereas it is critical that roads on PEI be safe to travel for all Islanders;

And whereas many Islanders who live in the South Shore area travel on Highway 19A to get to work and school;

And whereas the initial portion of Highway 19A from West River to Long Creek is cleared with a Government vehicle “combination truck” that has the capability to both plow snow and spread sand/salt until the portion of Highway 19A turns into Highway 9 at the Long Creek intersection;

And whereas the Government plow is not completing the 3 km stretch of Highway 19A between Long Creek and Canoe Cove;

And whereas winter conditions on the above mentioned 3 km stretch of Highway 19A is treacherous in ways that other adjacent sections of road are not;

And whereas numerous residents of this area have lodged repeated complaints with the Department of Highways over many years;

We hereby petition the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island to strongly encourage the Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy to continue to clear the remainder of Highway 19A using Government vehicles; in particular, a combination truck as opposed to contracting out this section of Highway 19A.

It is certainly not hard to tell where the government plow stops and private start.with both plowing and salt /sand.think we all pay the same amount in taxes so think we all deserve the same treatment

Remember we have busses filled with children that have to battle route 19's terrible road conditions! There's no way we should be able to tell where one plow route ends because of the night and day road conditions! And one pass of sand straight up the center of the road is not acceptable.

This stretch of road has been terrible for years and the plowing and sanding is not up to the same standard of the rest of the roads in the area. Is this plow operator lazy or incompetent? I actually took some pictures at the route 19A/9 intersection a month or so ago and the comparison is day and night. Route 9 North and Route 19A East are well plowed, sanded and salted (bare asphalt visible). Heading west from this intersection (towards Canoe Cove) the road looks barely plowed and a very small amount of "sand". This is totally unacceptable. I will provide these photos if requested.

It is not a large or unreasonable request, such a small distance to ensure safety. Now the road is so treacherous when we get bad weather. The Government should be embarrassed to say that the road maintenance is done to minimal requirements and that is all they are responsible to ensure is being done. It makes me feel that my life and the lives of others that travel on this section of road are not worth very much to this government.

So many cars go off the road on this stretch, I'm surprised that there hasn't been a bad accident. Just a matter of time if nothing is done.

It's not like we are getting hammered by snow storms. There is no good excuse as to why salt wasn't put down after all the massive flooding that froze into massive ice field in canoe cove.

This is a very dangerous situation. The condition of the road beyond the Long Creek intersection is unacceptable. Its very easy to see the difference in the maintenance between the two sections of road.

This section of road is dangerous in the winter months
