Great thoughtful idea, we all will need some kind of help in our lives. I just feel that there are better options that need to be looked and considered before we hastily commit to something that has not been thoroughly discussed with all in the community,

I just heard of this petition today, and am not for this tent city at all. I agree with all the above concerns. I will be at that meeting on Tuesday.

This petition is the first I've heard of this proposal. A homeless camp is obviously a hot-button issue with many implications for the community and it deserves sufficient tie for public discussion.

I agree with the concerns mentioned by others and think that there is a better alternative to this location.

Historic LAHAINA is a remarkable tourist attraction that brings many tourists that stimulate the economy of our island. A homeless camp would jeopardize this and bring more crime to this area. Please relocate this camp to another more central area.

I oppose the proposed Homeless Tent Camp in Lahaina/Puamana. It's is not the appropriate site and the crucial network of social assistance that is imperative for any level of success for such a shelter is not in place or planned.

This is a very bad idea. It is way too hot for a tent city and the area is not easily accessible for public transit or walking. There are much better places on the island for such a facility - places with trade winds and closer to essential services and places for employment.

More time is needed for the community to research any effects of a homeless camp in our residential areas before a decision is made to erect such a project in Lahaina.

I agree that we need to look at all possible problems that may arise. You are inviting people that maybe on drugs, alcohol, and campers that could have a history with violence. Mixing singles, couples and families in a stressed enviroment will lead to many added problems. With this campsite it will be causing many unforseen problems not only on these houseless people but also the everyday residence and our visitors here on Maui. There is a better and smarter way to deal with our problem in Hawaii nei!

This is the wrong place for this project but a great idea for a future location. Lets keep Lahaina a historical district not a tent city.

It would be much better to provide a more permanent solution with a building with beds and sanitation facilities. Putting the homeless camp where presently proposed presents a myriad of problems. It would be much better to study the issue thoroughly and come up with a proposal for a permanent solution that would not create what would up being a modern day hobo camp.

Do not want this to negatively affect tourism which directly affects my business. This needs to be done in a fiscally smart way, just having a tent does not solve problems.

I believe in helping all those who need it but we've already built a resource center in Lahaina for people in need. Is setting up a homeless shanty town in a hot dirty field near the highway really necessary and helpful? or will it just perpetuate more homelessness without proper oversight?

As a social worker and substance abuse counselor I would like to attend a public meeting to ask questions to the group who is proposing this rehabilitation center/camp for the homeless. Sometimes the media, including petitions have a slander on words. Yes, it may be a "homeless camp" but there is more to than that. There is also to be a professionals working with the homeless population to assist them in a rehabiliation process that will help promote and restabish positive moves back into minstream society. Those who would be participating in this program would have to be willing to do the work and that population would most likely have lower statics of high risks or deviant crimes that the community is worried about; substance abuse, theft, criminal charges, sexual violence. Most of the population who is aggressive and non-compliant would not be in this program. Anyways, I am voting on the petition because I believe that the community should have a chance to be a part of questions and answers before it is built. There is alot of fear from a special populations that often communities have. Their professionals should know that and have presented the community, not private members, but the open community the chance to speak first. This private non-profit organization does not have the same infrastructure I believe as the resource center and will have different types of results. I believe they will operate under different therapy models and hopefully then produce more success. I look forward to the meeting. Be opened minded. There are solutions for people in need. We need to work together not against each other. Mahalo.

Sadly, the majority of our homeless do not want to comply with the rules of the shelters that are already in place for them, I.E. No drugs, Alcohol,outstanding warrants. To give them free reign is to condone a dangerous lifestyle, rather than working to raise them up with treatment, counseling and work programs.
