Call for action regarding proposed homeless camp In Lahaina

This is not by any means a good idea.

Currently a full time resident of Lahaina, but was in San Francisco as a resident when that city allowed a tent city (the Occupy Movement) downtown for several months. Filth, drugs, inappropriate behavior. Most of the homeless are substance abusers, a significant number have mental health issues. Unsupervised camping does nothing to solve these problems, but only adds blight. Even the extremely far left Board of Supervisors in SF saw what a disaster this was. Maui, don't make the same mistake.

Please consider long term solutions to this very complicated issue. Maui has always had a housing shortage and tent cities are clearly not the answer.

i do not stand behind this idea. Please take time to revise a proper plan.

This on so many levels is unsafe. Lets find another solution please.

This is madness.

We already have a problem with the homeless walking through our neighborhood, leaving trash and bottles on our sidewalk, while kicking our fence and teasing our dogs... the last thing we need is a reason for them to NEED to walk through. Unless we have additional police force to escort them to their destination, this will become a mess for tax paying homeowners.

I definately am apposed to a develpment for this homeless camp in Lahaina.

There are alternate sights that are more appropriate

The gateway to Lahaina is not the proper location to house the mentally ill homeless population.

Although I applaud the idea of helping the homeless, I believe this idea is poorly conceived and fraught with problems. The homeless would be in a hot, arid, dusty place without AC, close by transportation and medical services. The homeowners in the area would face depressed property values, pan handling and being around elements (drug use, needles, violence, visual blight) that have been seen in other such developments. If your job depends on tourism like many of us here in Maui, imagine those tourists coming to Lahaina and seeing this eyesore beginning their stay. I don't believe Conde Naste would renew our "Most beautiful island in the world" status. The way I see it, the only one to benefit would be the developers, West Maui Land as they could claim it's affordable housing and use land they can't sell and claim it as a write-off. If this project goes through as planned, the people of Puamana, Lahaina, Launiupoko, Puanoa and all the tourists visiting West Maui should be apologized to by those very people sworn to protect and to serve us.

I agree in having a designated area for the homeless, but this proposed location is illogical for many reasons. More research should take place to find a suitable location for these people in need; an area close to bus transportation and not on the side of the highway entering Lahaina.

However well intentioned, this plan is misguided on many levels. It will not solve the homeless problem, but rather in all likelihood will greatly increase the problem.

I am outraged at the thought of housing mentally ill and potentially dangerours homeless people at the entrance to Lahaina in close proximity to our homes. I urge you to prohibit this project.

This is a very bad idea. The first thing visitors to Lahaina will see is a tent city full of homeless people This will not make them feel welcome or safe.

Bad Idea!

None of these land owners or people who work for Peter Martin reside on West Maui. I'd like to see them try to put a camp like this next to Spreckelsville where Peter Martin lives!
