It is criminal what is happening to, in this case, Music in other cases the Arts. I have a heap of Ourimbah students whose dream was to study to be secondary Art and/or Drama teachers. Not going to happen!

The degree these students began should be what is offered to them. If changes are to be made, make them after these students complete their degrees.

UoN has had their creative arts and humanities departments systematically vandalised for years and is a shell of the amazing courses of a very high quality that were on offer. The fact that the Con hall now has LECUTRE SEATS in it speaks volumes (a hall that had better acoustics than Angel Place). Newcastle is a vibrant creative city and can only stay that way if we are fostering and feeding talent here.

Regardless of any changes that the institution chooses to make to ‘improve’ courses for the future, UoN has an obligation to see the current students through to completion under the existing agreed framework.

Newcastle Conservatorium was a culturally rich place to study in the late 80’s/ early 90’s. I completed a Bachelor of Music Education(4years) and a Diploma of Music majoring on the Harpsichord(3years). We studied for gruelling aural, harmony, performance and history exams. It was a true study of Music taught by an outstandingly talented staff. You will find some of the most dedicated music teachers( private studio and classroom) in Australia studied in Newcastle. I was once very proud of my qualifications despite what my father endured at the hands of Newcastle University. Second rate. Nice building!

Music courses have been dumbed down or removed from UON. Quality education is critical to create a diverse and cultured society. BTW, what has happened to our Harold Lobb concert hall?

This is not what we signed up for and what we are PAYING MONEY for. The whole reason we signed up for a Bachelor of Music was to learn about MUSIC
