I can understand having to provide Facebook with your given name for legal reasons and accountability. There is way too much on-line bullying and other nasty behaviour done by people who think that they can hide behind a screen name and feel confident that because their real name isn't being used, they can behave deplorably toward others and never get caught...never have to answer to the people that they hurt.
I DON'T understand why this information can't be held by Facebook until it is requested by authorities to help with investigations or even by Facebook itself to ensure that once someone has had his or her account shut down, it is very difficult to open a new one.
Why should it matter what name is on your Facebook page? What happens if you aren't known by anyone by your given name, (like Granny) but by a nickname? What if you're being stalked and would still like to keep in contact with your friends, but don't want your stalker to know? I know that this is the internet and that there is supposedly no privacy on the internet, but are we not entitled to what illusions of privacy we have?
It's really no surprise that more and more people are either switching to Twitter or just walking away from social media altogether.
You'll notice that I didn't use my real name here. It's because I never do and I should never have to! Good luck Granny Goodwitch!

Facebook's name policy is utterly absurd. There are so many reasons people may wish to use a pseudonym, all of which are legitimate. Facebook are simply abusing their popularity by trying to force people to do something totally unnecessary. I'd love to know why they have such a hard-on for enforcing "real" names, anyway. Facebook isn't a legal authority — it's a freaking social network! They need to get over themselves.
