I could not agree more with the subject of the petition. Also having children with different styles of learning I think it is time we rethink how we teach math to ensure that kids love it, stick with it and are successful at it.

I have conducted and published quite a bit of research on "developmental education" reform, and my personal conclusion is that the way math is conceptualized and taught in high school (and in most developmental and introductory college-level curricula) is entirely counterproductive. Current curricula and related instruction are not only outdated, but also breed math anxiety and aversion among most students, which in turn is a major barrier to college access and success. Focusing K-12 math instruction on data science would create more relevance in terms of how most students will actually use math in their professional lives, and would allow the use of instructional approaches which incorporate more hands-on, creative, and applied problem-solving techniques, which I think is likely to reduce students' math anxiety and aversion. Overall, I applaud RISC in their efforts to re-think the content and teaching of K-12 math.

Returned to school at age 40 to get a graduate degree in economics and noticed how little the algebra and calculus I was taught in high school prepared me for econometrics and using data to examine correlations for causation.

Math in all schools needs to be relooked at, but high school is an immediate issue as students are expected to memorize how to solve equations. First time I understood purpose of algebra was doing a task in Jo's On-line class.
