Bring Data Science to K12

As an educator that has worked primarily with underfunded schools with students populations that face additional barrirers, I feel that for the future of society as a whole, we need to re-examine the skills that are being taught in high school math curriculum. Students should be learning material that is relevant to the modern workforce in addition to personal finance.

Bring data science to k12 is urgently needed.

My entire career changed due to my poor math education. (Otherwise I was a straight A student). Today I find myself needing better data fluency and my lack of it is an impediment. I want to see better for the next generation.

As a statistician with a strong interest in Mathematics Education I agree with this movement. I do not think the mathematics currently taught is at all useless but I believe we can do better. I also really think we need more data science spread throughout the curriculum. I believe we need strong humanities as well in the schools. Without a higher purpose and strong ethics data science can be used for evil and not good.

We should teach the math that will provide the biggest benefit to people in their everyday lives, which includes data analysis. We’ve amended our language education over the years to match the language spoken today rather than holding onto the language spoken by our forefathers. It’s time for a change in math.

It is crucial that we update our math curriculum to reflect the times times. I've seen my child and others struggle with math that they will never use. It's time for a change.

Data Science needs to be a part of the common core framework and general curricular expectations for kids, not only in high school, but as early as Kindergarten.

Curriculum should serve the students, not the other way around.

We don't need MORE math, we need the RIGHT math.

I question every day why I am teaching the things that I am. So much of it is useless. I just hope that this becomes reality before I quit teaching.

I am convinced (though I no longer the data :) ).

Math should be updated to let students understand and appreciate the different applications of Math!

This is long overdue! Today's workplace needs persons trained in USEFUL math!

There is a reason why most parents have such a difficult time helping their children with high school math - it has little application in 98% of jobs, meaning we've forgotten how to do it and have trouble presenting a good argument as to why they "need" to learn it. Statistics and data analysis, on the other hand, are increasingly necessary to perform in a business environment for most of us, and to cut through the chaff of the sensational news cycle and be good citizens for all of us.

Math does make sense and it allows us to make sense of our world: however school is not promoting this sense making! Kids have asked " when will I ever use this?" for years and there has never been a good answer to that for high school math especially - until now - IF we change course!

I wish I had developed better data intuition and learned more about data analysis and logic (correlation vs causation, necessary and sufficient conditions, etc).
