If we want kids to stay invested in education then we need to ensure that we are making their education relevant. If we truly want to prepare our students for the world that we live in today, then the best way to do that is through teaching more data science. You don't get any where by staying stagnant.

I believe data science will be the most useful math skill for young people to learn. My colleagues and I use it at our R&D company more than anything.

I have two high school students and they both hate math. When I work with them and they say, honestly mom, when will I ever use this, I can't say. I know that data is important and statistics is useful in our current world. We need to reevaluate how we teach math and what we teach so that our kids can get interested, maybe even excited, and actually learn something.

It would be nice to have an appropriate answer for math students when they ask, "When am I ever going to use this?" - Data Science is something that has a use now and in the future.

I am a teacher and I am tired of communicating to kids that they are bad at math and constantly making them comply with standards that I know full well do not help them. It is a flawed system that I am doing what I can to disrupt.

I want to incorporate more data science into my math classes, but there is too much to cover in too little time. Each course is so packed with standards. To cover all of those standards, plus fill the gaps my students have and incorporate more important things like data science and social emotional learning is too much. We need less traditional standards, more 21st century standards, and state testing that only assesses the ESSENTIALS given at an equitable time.

Having worked on data in the past, this was on my mind when I later started my Data Analyst path where I would prepare my kids by the time they're in high school.
By the time my now Grade 1 twins are in high school, they will have well rounded curriculum, and support structure (my family included)
Little did I know there would be a data science petition when I bumped into youcubed a couple years ago looking for high quality & differentiated instruction.
Great initiative needs Great Support.

The questions "What does this sentence mean?" and "What does this chart mean?" are of equal value and should be indispensable in K12 education, as should learning how to construct a sentence and a chart.

There must be another path offered to students in Mathematics. And we must make that path reflect the needs of our society today. Many students in high school today find Algebra 2 and Calculus do not reflect their future or their interest.

Being an elementary math teacher sometimes I wonder why we keep teaching the same concepts, the same way, when some things are obsolete these days and other concepts would be more relevant in our students' future. Someone has to redesign the curriculum.
