Bring Data Science to K12

My daughters are in K & 1 - preparing them properly for college and the needs of a future workforce are paramount.

As a former secondary mathematics and business teacher, I can say we do not have students analyzing data and evaluating the source of that data nearly enough.

Our kids must be taught basic data fluency. The internet and globalization have presented them with a new world, new challenges.

Middle school statistics units are stuck in the dark ages. We are neglecting important concepts and skills necessary for success in today's world including visual displays of data and critical analysis of data.

Data literacy is critical.

Great work- the youth deserve this opportunity! All math topics are great but the ones that allow our students to become successful adults are the most important.

I am thrilled to see this topic enter the mainstream. International tests have seen our country decline in our math proficiency for decades. We absolutely need to modernize our K-12 math.

Using data correctly to problem solve is a key skill. I fully support this initiative. A class on basic financial literacy should also be taught (insurance, 401(k), budget, etc)

I think data fluency will become ever more important in years to come. It is important we teach young people how to work, learn, and live in this environment.

This is imperative. Students deserve to be prepared for the world they are apart of, and it's our job to prepare them. Our current curriculum simply fails to accomplish this.

I am a math teacher and am constantly frustrated with the resources available. Many are not applicable to the real world and do not teach students how to problem solve and think, rather just follow an algorithm. We already have computers. We need thinkers.

Our survival as a species and the future of our planet depend on it!

It is time we update our math curricula to align with the current research and data. I am a pediatrician and mother of 3 who LOVED math as a kid. However, in my experience as a parent trying to help my children with math homework, I found myself constantly stomped trying to understand the logic and reasoning of what was being taught or how it was being taught. I appreciate this new research showing that math reasoning is most important. I support modernizing K12 curricula to teach children math reasoning, math problem solving and data analysis, which is something we use in the practical world.

I don't want my children to grow up in a system that forces arbitrary, esoteric, and unhelpful material upon them.

When asked about graphs, my students rarely compare the scales to determine if it is skewed. This and many more concepts, like how to read the data evidence for reasoning, is sorely lacking and so very important for every citizen!

More emphasis needs to be placed on data literacy because data is what runs our society.
