I believe that high school math woefully under-preparws students for both college and most careers. As a math major undergrad, a Masters in Applied Statistics, and a Data Scientist by trade, I've been exposed to a broad spectrum of math and analytic skills. Standard high school math curricula have done little to nothing for me -- and I have helped teach and tutor college students and colleagues who have had significant gaps in their RELEVANT math/stats/analytic skills.

Thank you! I would say there is more to focus on besides math and besides specifically data science. I think it’s important to consider the relevance of other courses in the rapidly changing job market.

We are spending our time teaching students a curriculum that the vast majority of them will never use again in their lives. With the increasing implementation of AI resources, we don't need students who can follow procedures - that's what AI does - we need students who can analyze and problem solve.

Math education is broken. I majored in EE and Math, but use almost none of the math skills that I learned in school. We need more people that understand data and how to draw conclusions out of it.

Colleges need to recognize the substitute of IDS for alg2 and calc, if not, there won't be enough hours in the day of the lives of teens to do both. "Most rigorous" must include IDS, if not, kids will still be forced to take AP Calc.

I could not agree more that data literacy is an urgent need of focus. In fact, I recently had to help my school rethink how they were using the data provided by the PARCC and STAR assessments. Some decisions and comments were being carelessly made. Thank you for bringing this need to the forefront! My classroom is always open for research.

As a slow math learner myself, I know the feeling of being completely lost in pre-algebra having missed some crucial information during elementary. I didn't like math at all until I discovered statistics, which finally made sense to me as something useful. I eventually completed a doctorate degree in psychology and use statistics almost daily in my work as a school psychologist.

Eliminating parts of the Math curriculum because they are "hard" or because of a perception that they have no use in the "real world" is foolish. Re-examine what is necessary and teach that. And make sure teachers, especially in the lower grade, do not have Math anxiety themselves.
