The job skills needed today are different than years ago. The ability for a computer to do most math is key while the human understands what the results say. Story problems, real life examples, and analysis is data is what the future needs.

I am a Senior Capacity Planner at a large bank and recently went back to get my MBA in Businiess Analytics at the age of 55. There is a huge gap in data analytics skills in corporations and it is the most important skill for anyone working in business. Business that are winning with their customers are the ones that are analyzing their data and making smart decisions. The old days of managers making decisions on experience are over. All decisions need to be data-based with expert opinions supplementing how to take actions on the decision. I teach data analytics to STEM groups in the hopes of helping kids see the value of data workers. We need to get these courses in the schools now. Businesses are hungry for young people with this knowledge.

Always lended myself towards data study in school when I could, and now my profession centers around it. It has become a larger part of the SOA’s course learning and exams that I am working through currently. I could have benefited greatly from this type of study.

I am a math teacher and I desperately see a need for more relevant training when it comes to data. We are sending students into the world knowing how to rationalize denominators but not to be able to interpret complex data or to use data to support an argument.

Data fluency is crucial. I have long argued that the math curriculum should be designed toward statistics as the capstone class for all high school graduates. I would also like to see the interpretation, analysis, and presentation of data (i.e. data fluency) to be woven into other classes. Besides basic arithmetic, data fluency is the math skill that has the greatest impact on real life and on most careers.

As a retired financial analyst, I can attest to the need for data literacy. Working for a financial guarantor for many years, my primary responsibility was to report trends and risks, by making sense of the data available. Prior to this career I was a math teacher. Currently I am also a tutor for TASC (GED) students. Your attention to "Data Literacy" jolted me into recognition of the irrelevance of the current secondary school curriculum. We are not preparing students for the world into which they are going. So much improvement needed, so much more student engagement to tap into.
