Bring Data Science to K12

Data science is what I look for in business minds.

I used to own a small business and was amazed at how many people I encountered who had difficulty with basic math skills such as counting change, so will argue we're not necessarily even doing a great job teaching basic arithmetic (at least, in relation to how it applies in the real world.)

Please change things before my five year old reaches high school!

I have a minor in math. I couldn't do a calculus problem for a real-life problem even if one miraculously occurred. I use data science all the time and it gives me an advantage over others in my industry.

I am in the IT profession, and data drives every decision we make. I was lucky enough to major in data science, but we don't have enough people literate in data.

Just heard about this movement today. So excited to learn more.

I studied Biomedical Engineering in college and went to an Ivy League school. Outside of Calculus and linear algebra, most other math items were not useful.

We are no longer in a race to space, the old math curriculum (which we still use) is outdated. Data is now every where. If we want to prepare our students of today to be future positive members of society, our math curriculum needs to change.

We need data science to help creatively come up with advanced solutions to the problems our world faces.

I was an elementary school teacher with Teach for America before law school (taught 5th, 3rd, and 1st). The curriculum we used in south Texas district I taught in adopted a hybrid of state imposed and Common Core curriculum that taught math in what seemed to be a way more confusing/ complicated way than when I had to learn it as a kid. I truly believe that it's never too early to start kids "playing" and working with data, from recording the daily weather, to tracking how much a plant they planted is growing, to tracking how many words per minute they read. Data analysis and data tracking need to be more holistically integrated in what our kids are already doing so that they can see the applicability to the real world.

I am a public high school math teacher and I am 100% behind this movement.

We need applicable math for analyzing data and making a decision! I use it every single day as does every single person I work with.

Lets work to give our children the voices they need to understand and positively influence our local and global communities.

I am full on supporter of bringing data science to K12!

One of my biggest complaints about the current education system (both high school and college/university) is that when I graduated, I didn't feel like I had acquired any skills that were directly transferable to the "real world." And I took out $50k+ in student loans to help pay for it! Taking a class that would've taught me how to collect and analyze data in order to make an informed decision about something would've given me a STRONG start to my career!

It is heart breaking how many students come into high school math resistent and broken. I hope we can change their resistance to resilience and wonder.

As a retired special education teacher, I agree that we have an obligation to our students to encourage math that will engage them in future endeavors. Not so that they feel less then their potential through Algebra 2 coursework. Thanks

Statistics and data analysis have been two of the most significant skills that I've taught incoming analysts at our company. Both are necessary to being thoughtful about reading the news and understanding different types of research represented factually in the media.
