Bring Backyard Chickens to Cambridge

I would love to have chickens in my neighbourhood, since it gives a feeling of a healthy and alive neighbourhood. In my opinion listening to possible chicken 'noise' cannot be any worse than listening to dogs bark. Indeed it would be a pleasant to listen to.

Everyone should have the right to act towards a healthier lifestyle!

Children love pets!! If they happen to have chickens, they are learning the very basics of healthy living. Eggs are an essential part of our diet. If managed properly and kept clean, most of your immediate neighbours will appreciate the odd dozen fresh eggs now and then. Make it a community effort and all will benefit . As a prior resident of Guelph for many years, I greatly enjoyed keeping laying hens. Our neighbours loved them too, and the local kids would drop by to feed them, pet them, and collect extra eggs. I understand that some residents not accustomed to hens might have concerns regarding noise or odour. Fortunately, as with any properly cared-for pets, hens are quiet, well-behaved, sanitary, and often social. We were very disappointed upon moving to Cambridge to find that the bylaw does not permit backyard hens. Thank you so much for your progressive efforts to change this! I have been trying to move to Cambridge but I currently have 4 Heritage laying hens. I live outside of Arkell. Having hens and sharing the fresh eggs is too big a part of me to give it up. I have read a lot of banter from officials who are not very well informed regarding backyard poultry. With the proper limitations in place (limiting numbers to 4 and no roosters for example), none of what I've heard holds up. Chickens in a "chicken tractor" (portable coop and pen) can be moved around the yard to allow for natural fertilizer and lawn care. Hens are easy to care for and keep clean with a weekly routine. I'm just not willing to give up my hens or the enjoyment, home grown food or my strong belief in this movement back to a more local and sustainable way of life. Everyone of us needs to do what little we can to promote and take part in caring for our community and future. I fully support this petition! Thank you!

Me too.... I moved from Brampton where they were legal.... I grew up with chickens until I moved to Canada. ...they make for wonderful pets....and with raising food prices.... they can really help people out....

I was wanting chickens until I found out it was illegal. If I can grow my own veg I should be able to raise chicken as a source of protein.

I have had hens at my place since I took over our home, but only because there has been continual use. I think that the city should allow for this. It helps provide food for families, teaches children responsibility and connects them to where food comes from. I don't see this as any additional burden on the city. The city already regulates other pets within city limits, why not chickens? I would suggest that the city limit the number of hens that a family can have and make a "no rooster" clause. Other than that I fully support this.
