3 strikes for felons, one strike for nobel winner fighting cancer. Thats called dumb, just like his comment. Way overdoing it hrre.

A brilliant career should not be slung on the scrapheap because of over reaction to a throwaway comment. This man is more important to mankind working in a laboratory, not pruning roses in a garden. Grossly unfair treatment - please reinstate.

I am so tired of this type of bullying behavior. No longer is it acceptable to screw up when speaking publicly. A nervous idiotic quote can ruin your life.

Outrageous to sack Tim Hunt for a light-hearted joke after all the good work he has done. Shame on those responsible.

There are many regrettable aspects to the Tim Hunt affair, perhaps the most - the words he spoke in jest. Nevertheless that is not the only concern. University College London’s hasty action in requesting Hunt’s dismissal is simply another exercise in administrative power over academe. Another scalp useful in making sure that the rest of the academics stay in line- if they can do this to someone as eminent as Hunt for no real cause other than temporary embarrassment, what else will they do if someone raises real issues – such as the gross disparity in remuneration between academic and senior admin staff, the appalling conditions of employment of temporary staff and junior academics?

There has been an appalling over-reaction to Professor Hunt's jocular comments, a hysterical 'trial by Twitter/social media and the flames have been fanned by certain self-described 'liberal' newspapers. As an alumnus of UCL, I am appalled by the pompous, self-righteous attitude of UCL. When I studied there, it was a place where different opinions were tolerated, humour was understood and human frailties were forgiven. Now, it seems, good sense has been thrown out in favour of political correctness.

The rather awkward attempt at humour may have been dodgy, but the actions of UCL are worrying. I am withholding my name as the university I work for may not be pleased that I think differently. If I say (I'm female) that his humour is rather typical of his generation and may be explained by his spending too much time in the lab with other blokes, am I also being ageist/and or sexist?

The world of social media needs to lighten up. The man made a mistake in making a flippant remark. Give him a break!

Bring back Tim Hunt! This crusade against him is much more sexist than his remarks!

How deeply depressing that a well-meant and fairly feeble joke should cause such a furore. Those berating Tim Hunt are obviously lacking two senses - common sense and sense of humour.

Asking for his resignation was completely over the top. Yes, what he said was not very nice but he hasn't murdered anybody!! Reinstate him as soon as possible

Outraged that he was forced out without a chance to give context.

It is disgraceful that a joke cannot be made in public now in case the idiotic easily offended group get hold of it and make your life a misery. It is nothing less than fascist bullying. Our society needs to address this problem now. Free speech has been lost. It is getting to the point that there are things you are not allowed to think. This episode is the modern day equivalent of being executed for blasphemy.

Reaction has been completely disproportionate to mild mannered joke (which several female friends admit has a lot of truth in it). We need to stand up against this fascist PC thought police.

What an unbelievably sad world we live in. I find the image of male and female scientists falling in love with each other rather appealing and I have (felt like) bursting into tears many times when I have been criticised. I envy women the cultural permission they have to have the odd cry.

A silly joke should not deprive us of the services of a great scientist.

I don't condone his sexist comments, but common sense must prevail.
