Free speech has to include the right to say what others may find offensive, otherwise it isn't free speech at all. It is absolutely disgraceful that a respected and competent scientist has been hounded out of his job because of an ignorant baying twitter mob who don't happen to like his views.

An hysterical reaction instead of commonsense, and a hugely and undeservedly hurtful sanction against two great scientists, Tim and his wife Mary. Tim Hunt, like other scientists and mathematicians, may sometime have problems with humour as they are not so good at anticipating other people's emotional reactions. Their 'silly' jokes are no reflection on their morals. UCL and ERC take him back and apologize to him and his wife.

The current academic culture of fear and politics where PR is king and you can be fired for a single comment is far more off putting to me as a junior female researcher than any dozen misjudged comments from otherwise blameless senior scientists that you'd care to throw at me. The guy said a really stupid thing but the over-reaction makes me embarrassed to be a women.

This is despicable treatment of a man who did nothing to deserve it. Women do cry when criticised, and they need to cut it out! Also, if you work with a group of men, and they (plus your boss) invite you to join them for lunch, but you go with the secretary instead because "she's a girl", then you have a serious problem. Note: I am female and I have been there!
