What was once a righteous quest for equality has been gradually subverted by those who would blame all the ills of the world on men and seek unfair advantage in the process. Either these exacting standards apply to both(which they so do not at the moment!) or neither. Otherwise one kind of ignorance is replaced with another. An end to this tolerated hyper-policing and abuse of males in British society.

The whole situation is ridiculous, with a mass over reaction, and disproportionate response from the university. Equality and freedom of speech works both ways, and speaking as a woman, I heard the sense in his comments, even if they were jocular in their delivery.

Although his comments may have been inappropriate even if jocular, a written warning should have been the worst punishment, but better a word of advise. This appears to be a possible constructive dismissal with the necessary repercussions financially for the University.

It's like we're living in the Dark Age once again when religion restricts our freedom of speech.
No man living in the 21st century should have to lose his job over saying the "wrong" joke.
Let alone a Nobel Prize-winning scientist. If these witch hunts can stop scientists from advancing our knowledge and technology then we need to assess the danger of this new religion : political correctness.
