Studies suggest that up to 40% of workers have dated a coworker. There are documented gender differences in stress response, with females being more inclined to cry. He joked about common knowledge and doesn't deserve this.

Another point missed by most: the clumsy joke was intended, in large part, to be against himself - he and his wife fell in love while working together in a lab, and he found the experience, um, very distracting and detrimental to the science being done!

There are no words to describe how absurd it is to fire a person over such an inane comment. It really reflects poorly upon the University College of London and the European Research Council rather than Tim.

We want the UCL to reinstate Tim Hunt, biochemist and Nobel laureate, after he was forced to resign due to the backlash he has received because of a joke. We would also like to show our appreciation for his work and efforts within sciences

No 'profuse apologies'. He made a bad taste joke. But that should not be a ground to deny his students the opportunity his knowledge and his expertise.

It just goes to show how little some people have to do that they find time to vilify without a second thought. The remarks were amusing enough and were so blatantly untrue that they required no comment.

My mother graduated in physics in 1931. My aunt in 1932 and fell in love with a student. My father worked with Dorothy Hodgkin.

I did a post-doc at UCL. I cannot credit the way it has bypassed its own normal procedures to join in an electronic lynch mob.
