So tired of these knew-jerk reactions to a silly little joke. As a woman I was not offended in the slightest by his comments but I am offended by the fact that a man of Sir Tim's stature can be treated this way because of the foot stamping by the on-line 'I am offended' brigade. This man has done far more for the human condition then they have or ever will.

I know Tim for more that 40 years. He was always fully supportive of women working in science and the position of British and European academic authorities as well as the attitude of the media are irresponsible and damaging to scientific and academic research.

This is preposterous. Why would anyone in their right mind even think of sacking a Nobel Laureate because of something he said. Not DID, but SAID. This whole story is so disturbing, you can smell the political correctness. Speaking as a future scientist however, what disturbs me the most is that random mobs not even REMOTELY related to science can dictate what transpires in a circle they are not a part of. This is just another example and result of giving power to people who do not deserve it, social justice warriors that is.
If you can't handle criticism, you shouldn't be a scientist. Let alone if the criticism is directed to others and not yourself.

As someone said as a post on FB, "This story went completely out of proportion. What Tim Hunt said, was, let say, politically not quite correct, but this witch hunt is ridiculous. I personally, as female PI, experienced females crying in my office while they had problems accepting the critics or failure of an experiment. The guys react differently and that is what we all have to expect. And, unfortunately, I can confirm that now and then female students put their charms out on display to influence their male PI. But those are exceptions. Am I now also sexistic, because I reported honest observations?" That pretty much says it all, except that the treatment Tim Hunt has experienced is a disgrace.
