Reinstate this worthy man. It is not the job of UCL to stifle free speech and prevent staff from telling the truth. Universities must encourage truthful comments, not persecute those who publish them orally or in print.

I may not agree with what he said, but he should have his right to say what is in his mind without being lynched. Britain and the world just celebrated the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. Does Clause 39 (No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land) - and its equivalent in modern statutes - still apply?

I'm a female scientist who is appalled that UCL allowed itself to be bullied in this way, and that a renowned scientist was ruined over TWITTER, for God's sake.

There is some truth in what Mr. Hunt said. I've seen it personally. Just because others don't like it, doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to say it. Freedom of speech!

A bad joke does not justify to be sacked (and especially without a proper "trial"). A scientist must be judged on his scientific achievements, not on his capacity to fit with public opinion.

Tim Hunt has been appointed to his positions for his scientific achievements - to dismiss him for a humorous remark is outrageous.
