This guy made a joke in poor taste. He is guilty of being awkward in social etiquette. Had he not spent most of his life trying to make lives easier and healthier for all of us people who understand social etiquette, maybe he would not be so socially awkward. This is a perfect example of soapbox trolls looking for something to attack. His life's work not only in his field but equality for women in his field says hands down that it was meant to be irony. Bring him back!

The “social activists” that saw to this scientist's social and subsequent professional demise have ironically, either participated in or advocated for behavior that they seem to unanimously oppose, the muddling of social attitudes and institutional consequences. It's true that sexism does exist, but his comments did not appear to me to be a matter of sexism: it was not as though Dr. Hunt was advocating for any aversive attitude towards women in STEM, but merely making a frankly crass joke that even if considered to be a representation of his genuine sentiment, was made with the expectation that his views were not to inform any manner of institutional action. To the contrary, the so called progressives who through the medium of social media, have defamed and prompted Dr. Hunt's involuntary resignation, have done so almost systematically and deliberately. It borders fascism to assert one can be guilty of the thought crime of holding sexist beliefs. The possession of those ideas we cannot honestly or fairly berate, but there is a fine line between honestly speaking one’s mind to bring to light one’s opinions and promulgating a concept with discriminatory ramifications. The latter of the two could be critiqued in a progressive society, the prior ought to prompt social discourse, an attempt to debate and present itself as an opportunity to educate.

No one should be forced to resign for having an opinion and especially not without a hearing. Would a woman making similar comments about a man be forced out of her job? Is it now a crime for us to exercise our right to think?

We need to support women in science, but forcing someone to resign over a mis-judged comment, for which he later apologised is not the way to go about it.

I believe the person(s) who directed that his wife be contacted with the message that Professor Hunt had to "resign immediately or be sacked" should themselves be sacked. There's no place for totalitarian fascism at UCL or any Western institution of higher learning.
