Because the media decided to sacrifice him on the alter of PC. Never mind he clarified his joke seconds after the quote they mined. Disgusting.

A travesty, he was clearly supporting women in science.

Let's stop twitter from controlling our important decisions in academy, politics and all levels of our lives. Stop the indiscriminate, cold and immature power that twitter and other social networks have on our life.

This knee-jerk, irrational "controversy" is beyond derision. It's like something from a cartoon.

One thing that should be done IMO is to subject EVERYONE who forced Sir Tim Hunt to resign to the same "public judgement". So, it should be demanded that their names and positions be made publicly available.

Let Tim come back, don't let the permanently offended reactionaries get their way. They are not well meaning and should not be pandered to. Greetings from the Netherlands!

No person should be subjected to this kind of witchhunt for making a joke. The outrage culture has gone too far.

This is ridiculous. Bring him back, nobody should have started an entire witch-hunt against him in the first place. Also, formal apology to him should be made.

This person was unjustly removed from his position due to a statement purposefully taken out of context by a corrupt media pushing the agenda of the perpetually offended. It is unjust.

Because Witch Hunts help no one and should never be rewarded.

As a true liberal, a champion of learning it saddens me that such an intelligent man’s livelihood, worth is reduced just to stroke egos and push an agenda.

When first hearing of this story I was not at all surprised that Sir Tim decided to resign - I, like many other people, I suspect, assumed that I was being told the full facts of what he had said, which seemed to be inappropriate to say the least. However, with this 'new' information becoming apparent, it seems that the reporting of what Tim said, by EVERY news agency, newspaper & broadcaster, was almost fraudulent in its lack of veracity. This cannot stand, and Sir Tim should, at the very least, be exonerated and receive an apology for the very poor way he has been treated.

He should not only be brought back but he deserves a huge apology from those who forced him out. Jokes about women don't hurt science, this ordeal hurts science.

Be free to say what comes to mind even if its wrong and let others be free to judge for themselves and not have their minds made for them. We can move forward together or we can sacrifice progress in the name of political correctness...
