Another CILIP own goal. Integrity and prestige are hard won but oh so easily lost.

Renaming this award is short-sighted and a shameful erasure on so many levels. Erasing the role of women in art history. The name of Kate Greenway will long outlive the brand of audiobooks that CILIP has pandered to. I demand that CILIP reinstate Kate Greenway's name on their illustration award.

I feel that it is important that Kate Greenaway be kept in the illustration award from CILIP

I am a member of the Children's Books History Society (CBHS) and I am requesting that you reconsider the rebranding of the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration and to please reinstate the original name of Kate Greenaway.

It's really shocking that an important woman's name on an award is being replaced by a man's for the purposes of supposed better publicity! How can this be happening in 2023?

they are just writing women out of history...

So disappointing to see a woman's name erased under the guise of 'rebranding' - a regressive and divisive decision by CILIP.

I am a member of CILIP so it is a shame when rebranding obscures an already limited visibility of historical women especially in preference for an already well known male figure.

Shame on you! CILIP, I don't think you actually represent your membership anymore! Kate Greenaway was a brilliant pioneering artist and should be remembered and honoured.

The change was not the right decision and done without consultation or respect for women, particularly Kate Greenaway. It would be easily altered again.

Good grief! I was a member of the Library Association before it became CILIP, and I was on the YLG regional committee for the Carnegie and Greenaway nominations. This is appalling.

Disappointed to hear of the re-branding of the Kate Greenaway award.

I understand the role of commerce and how difficult running awards like this are, but this massive own-goal. needs to be reversed. The Kate Greenaway Award was the Oscar of children's illustration with a long and storied history. It's mad to sacrifice that. Ben Smith Publisher

The Kate Greenaway Medal has been a key part of my comprehension of the landscape of children’s books since I was small. As a little girl in my local library, I understood that a book with the Kate Greenaway medal on it was a thing to treasure. Illustrators and picture books need fighting for. They deserve to be elevated and championed. The Kate Greenaway - hugely prestigious, with so much glorious history - did that. It is a distinct award with a distinct identity and a distinct purpose. To remove its name, to blur it with the Carnegie, seems to devalue all of that, and pictures and picture makers with it. With its clear, historic, golden identity, the Kate Greenaway is valued not just by the illustrators, authors and the publishing industry, but by parents and children as a clear, global brand (if we need to call it that). Please don’t change it.

I can see no reason to change the name of such a long-standing award with international 'brand' recognition. It is an award for book illustration, not literature, and should retain its unique identity.

Stop trying to erase women, it won't end well!
