An illustration award should have the name of an illustrator, not an industrialist

This seems a very odd decision. Why has a celebrated illustrator been dropped from the name of the award? If it HAD to include the name of the sponsor, why not retain the "Greenaway" name. The Carnegie award is something different.

Her nature drawing is utterly amazing and she should have her own name reinstated

Rebranding an award (or a building) from the name of an honored, respected, relevant historical figure to a transitory corporate entity is repugnant and wrongheaded. Why not just call it the Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. Carnegie Medal, otherwise?

The name of an accomplished woman, whose work is directly relevant to the award, Should remain the name of the award

To remove such an important name is absolutely appalling.

Offensive in the extreme. To take away the name of a woman who illustrated beautifully and replace it with a corporation and a man who never illustrated anything (and who, by the way, has been recognized widely already for his accomplishments) is taking a step backward. Please reconsider.

A very well thought out argument. The change was not well publicised until a fait accompli.

The name of The Kate Greenaway Medal has been an important inspirational goal for women, a reminder of a history of female professionals. It is disheartening and disappointing to see her name has been stripped away.

It is important for Kate Greenaway's contribution to illustration not to be forgotten for what she did.

The name of the medal brings up the “who was” question….better to look to Greenaway for inspiration.

I grew up with Kate Greenaway illustrated books and would like my grandchildren to have the same opportunity. She is very important and the signal sent out to girls and young women that female artists are not important and do not merit recognition is going against all that many woman campaigned for in the last century and still have to in the present. Perpetuating the male and commercial in art particularly in the field of children's literature is backward and exclusive. Please reinstate her name, you could always add 'sponsored by ........'

Her name isn't even being rubbed out for another illustrator, it is for an industrialist who already has enough things named after him.

I’m a Children’s Librarian and was on YLG for many years. This is a terrible decision and insulting to illustrators.

Much preferred the two awards being separate as this made it easier to have different aged pupils being involved. In each of the awards. Now it seems, only the seniors are involved

This CILIP move away from recognition of a pathbreaking woman artist and cultural figure points in exactly the wrong direction relative to every other organization which is trying to incorporate more diversity, more equity, and more inclusion of names and voices of historically (and currently) oppressed groups including members of the group "women." Women artists and illustrators are grossly underrepresented in histories of art and are still grossly underrepresented in art books, art galleries, and art exhibitions. This is why Griselda Pollock, the Virginia Woolf of art history, was made the Holberg Prize Laureate in 2020. I'd love to hear what Griselda Pollock would say about your decision to invisibilize Kate Greenway!
