Why Yoto? Presumably because they are sponsors. As far as I can see their main product is an audio player, which makes the illustrative component of children's literature irrelevant, except perhaps for the packaging. Presumably the name is inspired by the Manchu Prince Yoto, (1599-1639) whose link with children's book illustration I have not researched. What is wrong with a strapline: The Kate Greenaway Medal - sponsored by Yoto?
This confirms my practice of referring to the Library Association as Silly P.

Kate Greenaway was the first woman illustrator to become a member of the Society of Authors. Her place in the histories of the book, of illustration, and literary awards should continue to be recognised and respected. Bring back the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Why change a name that honours such a deserving and familiar figure in the world of children's book illustration? The Kate Greenway brand someone & something very dear to generations of book lovers.

CILIP has form for ill-advised renamings. Who remembers it spending £30K in a failed attempt to rename itself in 2013?

Branding expediency has got to be one of the worst reasons imaginable to rename an award that has long had its own identity.

Unless it is necessary to change (and it is NOT) then it is necessary not to change.

I am very happy to be able to add my name to the list of people who object to CILIP's decision.

Too few women are recognised for their achievements. The decision to strip the medal of Greenaway's name demonstrates that women's history has to be constantly safeguarded.

As a librarian I would like to add my voice to those asking for the restoration of Kate Greenaway's name to the award. Removing the name of a talented woman illustrator and replacing it with that of a steel magnate (even a philanthropic one) is very retrogressive.

To rename this medal is a backward step. We need to big up women and their place in illustration, other professions and life generally

This award should be named after Kate Greenaway, one of few recognized women contributors to children's books, and Illustration. Her work and contributions are obviously more appropriate for the award than a sponsor who's name is already the header for another literary award.

I have read CILIP's press release issued in response to this petition which says that the review in 2017 recognised the need to enhance the status of illustration within the overall awards and to recognise illustrators on equal terms as writers. It is odd that they feel removing the name of one of the great female illustrators from the medal is meeting those requirements. Surely that is demoting the award to being merely a side-kick of the Carnegie writers award?

I think there’s more than enough recognition of men’s achievements. We can’t let them remove the few acknowledgements of women’s achievements that exist. Shameful decision.

Please restore the name, Greenway was a hugely important illustrator. It is inappropriate to change the name to Carnegie, for the sake of corporate advertising.

Insensitive and unthinking corporate decisions such as this undo the hard work and progress made by those striving to give illustrators the recognition they deserve. This is an important award for all involved. Let's do things the right way and continue to make positive change.
