Mr. Griffith is a gem and Batavia would be making a short-sighted decision to cut him.

Orchestra teacher should be reinstated

We need specialized teachers to teach specialized skills across the district as a whole. A teacher who specializes and excells in math should teach math. A teacher who specializes and excells in orchestra should teach orchestra.

My husband and I moved to Batavia in 2014 and were drawn to this city primarily because of the reputation of the schools. We knew Batavia was on the right track to allowing students to have multiple opportunities in the arts, not just a “standard” curriculum that covered their bases. I was so excited when I subbed for the RMS not only to see they had an orchestra program, but to see that each grade level had not one, but TWO classes in orchestra filled with ENTHUSIASTIC students who loved to come to orchestra each day. You do not get that sort of enthusiasm if there is not an experienced teacher there to foster that and teach them. I love bragging to my friends about Batavia and how we had such a strong orchestra program. I am now apalled to say that they have cut this position and plan on replacing it with a teacher who’s training and interests might lie elsewhere. It seems really backwards to cut back on a program that is thriving, and sets the district apart from others in the area.

What is going on with these awful decisions RMS is making. My daughter loves him as an orchestra teacher. Doesn’t make sense.

This teacher has had a significant impact on the music ability of my daughter as well as her social and emotional well-being. After the proposed schedule change earlier this year, I am concerned that BPS101 does not have the best interest of students in mind when making key decisions. My hope is that you act accordingly to your mission statement and focus on continuous learning and growing for all students, students that include individuals interested in the fine arts.

Chris Griffith is one of the BEST educators that Rotolo currently employs. It would be a big mistake to lose him, and it would devastate the Orchestra program. The strong arts and music programs in BPS were one of the reasons we bought a home here.

Seems to me reducing teachers who serve 52% of the student body isn’t *really* in the best interest of the students.
